The Gaslight Anthem The first two words that come to mind when I hear the words ‘The Gaslight Anthem’ are ‘cult following’. Whilst they never seem to be part of the mainstream music consciouness, they have garnered a huge following that has made them one of the most popular rock bands of the past decade. That cult following is definitely evident in Manchester’s Apollo this Monday evening.

The Charlatans As Tim Burgess looked out at the bouncing crowd filling the Apollo from underneath his dyed peroxide blonde fringe and launched into the opening lyric from ‘North Country Boy’ with steely force and confidence, I knew that this was going to be one of those gigs. Playing their 1997 hit album Tellin’ Stories in its entirety, The Charlatans brought the house down on Friday, leaving their audience for the most part in a state of shock and awe.

Buzzcocks Tonight I witnessed a real moment of music history. Buzzcocks were one of the key punk bands of the 1970s and three versions of the band are now reunited for two nights only (Manchester and London). When any band gets back together again after a long absence, there are always arguments among fans about whether it’s the definitive line-up that people really want to hear. Usually someone is missing, but with this reunion you have the two distinct and classic line-ups, plus the current version. The quirk is that the various editions of the band are performing three sets in reverse order.
