Chicago-born singer-songwriter Aleem returned to London after the European Tour with Fifth Harmony last October, performing songs from his previous singles at The Social. When I first listened to Aleem, I immediately became a fan! There’s something about his voice, music and style that immediately steals your attention. Maybe his acoustic-guitar performance which had the Ed Sheeran vibes that made his music feels familiar yet different. I knew that I have to see him performing live!

I had the opportunity to interview Aleem prior to the gig. Check out the interview video below to find out about Aleem’s music, inspiration, plans and more.

On stage, Aleem was accompanied by Austin, also on the acoustic-guitar. Aleem started off with “Didn’t Even Try”. Many had their phones out, recording the moment as Aleem serenading the crowd. Everyone could not help, but to get totally immersed with the song.

Aleem then, talked about the experience during the first time he performed in London, opening for the Fifth Harmony in late 2016 before proceeding with his take on The Script’s song, “Breakeven”.

Before continuing with the next song, “Underneath”, Aleem explained the meaning behind the song. He talked about him, being different, as his family is from Pakistan, and he was raised to embrace his culture and religion, and the song proposed to take the chances despite being different than everyone else on the surface. There is a part of the song that goes, “there’s so much more to me, if you could see underneath”, to never judge a book by its cover, to put it simply.

Before singing “Inside Out” from his “Open Letter” EP, Aleem told the crowd that when he left the studio at 2am that morning, the song just clicked and he was satisfied with the song. “Inside Out” did extremely well and it has been streamed for more than 2 millions times on Spotify in less than a year from when it was released! What an accomplishment! “Inside Out” is one of my favourite song of Aleem’s other than his latest “Taken By You”.

Aleem ended his setlist with “Strange Thing”. It was a short, half an hour set and how I wish it would have been longer. I am excited to see what next he has for us and for him to have a much larger crowd, performing in London again soon.
