Gig Review + Photography by John McEvoy

A sure sign you’re on the right track is when the original venue for the gig has to be moved due to high ticket demands, and on that basis 22 year old London based Tom Misch is clearly getting it right. Leeds Uni couldn’t meet the demand so on a post ‘Beast from the East’ Monday evening we found ourselves at a near capacity Leeds O2 Academy.

Support was provided by Poppy Ajudha, who delivered a smooth jazzy, soulful set and is being touted as a one to watch in 2018. Based on what I heard and saw it would be hard to disagree with that.

9:00pm and on walked Tom Misch along with his four piece band and went straight into ‘The journey’ from his Beat Tape 2 release. From the outset this felt like a home fixture and the crowd lapped up the slippery, wonky funk laced with jazz throughout the night. This was his first appearance in Leeds and he seemed genuinely taken aback by the rapturous reception the crowd gave him.

Tonight’s gig featured several of the new tracks including ‘Movie’, a slow jazzy groove which was one the highlights for me. ‘South of the River’ was another favourite with the crowd and deserves to be a huge summer hit.

Ably supported by a very tight band, the set flew by, and also included a nice little cover version of ‘Isn’t she lovely’ which kicked off a singalong. Before you knew it we were into the encore which with ‘Watch me dance’ including some very nice violin work bringing the set to a close.

Tom Misch may not be widely known at the moment, but if there’s any justice he can’t be far away from reaching a wider audience. One appearance on Jools Holland may do the trick, oh and making friends with hip hop royalty like De La Soul can’t harm either.

Don’t forget to check out his new album ‘Geography’ which is out on the 6th April and features guest spots from Loyle Carner, Poppy Ajudha, and De La Soul.

He’s still got a few dates left on this tour in London and Birmingham and if you’ve got tickets you’re in for a real treat.
