Gig Review + Photos by Lee Allen

25 years ago a 16 year old version of me found a band call The Wildhearts and nothing was the same again. I lost count of the amount of times I saw them live, and ‘Earth vs the Wildhearts’ still remains one of my fave albums of all time. So it was with great excitement I trotted along to the Mill in Digbeth to see them smash through their debut with the original line up.

Over the years the band have been dogged by numerous problems so it was nice to see the boys walk out looking healthy and happy. The last few bands I have seen play albums in full have mixed the running order up but tonight it’s strictly ‘Earth Vs’ as it was intended. The middle part of the album ‘My Baby Is A Headfuck’ into ‘Suckerpunch’ followed by ‘News Of The World’ makes for a an adrenaline fuelled live romp even after 25 years.

Coming back out for the encore it’s hit after hit finishing up with ’29 x The Pain’ and ‘I Wanna Go Where the People Go’ leaving The Mill a hot sticky mess. With the band firing on all cylinders it would be nice to see if they can record some new material that will reach the heights of their debut.

On a side note it’s great to finally get to The Mill. If you haven’t been yet its one of the best venues in Brum and the sound and sight lines are excellent. 2019 is looking like a an awesome year for live music in Birmingham.
