Taylor Swift

Not since my days as a 12 year old cross dressing juvenile, which I spent frolicking across fields in the Brownies have I been surrounded my so many prepubescent teenage girls. As my compatriots chanted for their heroine amidst Mexican waves I felt, as a middle aged man, as weird and confused in my current situ as I did 25 years ago. Anyway I digress…

Taylor Swift

As the lights dimmed we were deafened by high pitched screams and almost blinded by the multitude of neon lights being brandished by the tweens (slight exaggeration) Taylor Swift built the crowd up into a frenzy with Willows’s ‘Whip My Hair’ in the same manner in which a boxer makes his way into the ring. The only difference here was 15,000 feet stamping up and down quickly in unison in growing excitement. Oh, and Taylor Swift is not a boxer!

In the background a pre recorded vocal mantra (I assume from Taylor) whipped the teens up in to an absolute frenzy! Cue curtain drop, more screams and Taylor dressed in a stunning gold sparkly dress with number 13 embellished on her hand (I understand to be her lucky number) playing ‘Sparks Fly’ to the obvious delight of her vocal fans.

Taylor Swift

Amidst making heart symbols with her hands and rocking out with her ‘pop punk’ guitar playing sidekicks, two things quickly became apparent. With her golden locks and Hollywood smile, Taylor certainly is beautiful, and she’s also got an awesome pop country voice.

Taylor Swift

“Hello Birmingham and welcome to the Speak Now Tour”. “I am so happy to see my UK friends attending my tour, where I write songs about life love and break ups!” Maybe this dictum was not aimed at her target audience… I found it a little weird to hear Taylor talking about all things love/break up related to an audience largely made up of young kids, who (I hope) aren’t old enough to understand either.

Taylor Swift

Regardless of these ‘life lessons’ from their hero, and admits placards a plenty, professing ‘We love Taylor’  the glowing adulation from the largely female audience was palpable for the new ‘Princess of Country’.

Taylor Swift

During her set – which included a clever costume/set change with Taylor becoming a 1950’s songstress, together with black and white TV on the big screens. The popular songstress did a half a lap of the arena then hopped on another stage to give her fans at the back a closer look of their star. Nice touch! Whilst there she picked up a Ukelele, knocked over her mic stand and proceeded to sing the delightful ‘Fearless’, which for me was the stand out song of the night, which just so happens was nicely interspersed with snippets of Jason Mraz’s, ‘I’m Yours’. Next up the eclectically musically adept miss Swift picked up the 12 string guitar, which unfortunately was followed by more musings about breaking up – it seems she has a bit of a hang up. Taylor rounded-off the evening’s entertainment with ‘Love Story’, during which streamers and glitter galore showered the fans below…

Taylor Swift

By her own admission shameless plug of the night award went to…erm… Taylor herself as she asked fans to vote for her at voteacm.com for the Academy of Country Music Awards. Based on this performance and the reaction of her army of fans, she deserves it. Top notch gig and enjoyed by every, girl, girl and girl.

*04/04/2011 Congratulations to Taylor Swift on winning ‘Entertainer of the Year’ award at the AMCAs last night. Taylor says “This is the first time I’ve ever won this, and I’m just losing my mind. The fact that this is from the fans makes it so beautiful.”*

Special Congrats go out to the girl behind me who knew every word to every song. #taylorsbiggestfan
