Gig Review and Photos by Jason Broadhurst

Taking Back Sunday

The Manchester Ritz is the hosting place for tonights gig and due to a club night happening afterwards we have a ridiculously early curfew. Last time I saw tonight’s headline act Taking Back Sunday the supports were very different. This shows just how far they have come and how they have adapted themselves to keep themselves relevant over the past decade.

Luckily for me I made it in time for opening act Blitz Kids. Just as well really as they aren’t half decent. Like me a few fans have managed to gather to see them despite the early start of 6.50. The ones that have made it in time to see the local lads play through a number of their most popular songs are rewarded with a performance that will no doubt leave an impression.

Next up are the Marmozets, now this is a band on the rise, just off the back of their own UK tour and release of their debut album ‘The Weird And Wonderful Marmozets’. Their set is definitely full of energy with lead singer Becca Macintyre bouncing from wall to wall and showcasing her strengths as a frontwoman. This band is definitely going places and with a new UK tour just going on sale make sure you get them while you still can, I know I will.

Finally it’s time for the headline act, Taking Back Sunday. During their peak the band were easily one of the most popular ’emo’ bands around but now that scene has slowly died down how much of their fanbase is actually still around? Well 5 minutes before they hit the stage that question is settled, the room is absolutely packed. And as soon as the band kick into the opening track ‘What’s It Feel Like To Be A Ghost?’ the crowd is whipped into a frenzy. This is quickly followed by the crowd pleaser and one of my personal favourites ‘A Decade Under The Influence’. Lead singer Adam Lazzara is on top form loving having each and every fan in the palm of his hand. Despite going through many The band have been through many changes in their line up but you wouldn’t have guessed it with the way they move through the setlist. ‘You’re so Last Summer’ into ‘Error Operator’ was simply one of the best moments of the what was a setlist full of hits spanning the last decade.

The band finish with a combination of fan favourites ‘Cute Without the ‘E’ (Cut from the Team)’ and ‘MakeDamnSure’, it’s safe to say tonight has been about the fans they have enjoyed themselves and it has left us remembering just what a good band Taking Back Sunday are.
