Echo and the Bunnymen One of the bands of the alternative 80s, these guys with their haunting melodies and lead singer's trademark outspoken comments - 1984's 'Ocean Rain' was "the greatest album ever made" he declared at the time, these Liverpudlians made the charts their home. And 30 odd years on they are still out and about, still masses of dry ice and darkened image, tonight in Wolverhampton welcome Echo and the Bunnymen.

Therapy? Here at Gig Junkies we’re busy, busy, busy and this weekend is the first of three over three days for this little team - as we cover bands from across the UK. First gig of the weekend comes from the Emerald Isles courtesy of a Northern Irish alternative metal band, who according to their website have been ‘helping the afflicted since 1990.’ They are here to bring us their most successful and very possibly legendary album, celebrating it’s twentieth anniversary release - ‘Troublegum’ - we, the afflicted are here for a bit of Therapy?

Fun Lovin’ Criminals So on a January eve the boys that make up the Fun Lovin’ Criminals are back. They’ve kinda not been away - just lower profile as a band. The boys from New York City are in Wolverhampton City tonight, with their laid back, humorous and tongue-in-cheek approach to life.

Hawkwind Hawkwind are one of those legendary bands that seem to have been around forever. Much of their reputation comes from their superb live shows, which are audio-visual extravaganzas, featuring psychedelic lighting and dancers. Their current tour showcases their classic 1975 album ‘Warrior on the Edge of Time’ – plus a few other old favourite songs.

Skunk Anansie Skunk Anansie hit the stage at 1000 mph and don't let up! Since 1994 they have melted faces and stomped crowds in to submission. Iconic front woman Skin may have gained some hair but has lost now of her aggression and charisma seemingly charming and scaring in equal measure. Between bouncing around the stage and crowd surfing the length of the Wulfrun she doesn't give up for a single second. Tonight they sound incredible and rip through a set containing songs old and new and its clear why they still have such rapid devoted fans.

Mark Lanegan It’s good to see Mark Lanegan back in Wolverhampton. The last time he came, it was a low key gig at the Slade Rooms in 2010, accompanied by a single guitarist. Lanegan has had a lengthy, varied and distinguished career, notably as singer with Screaming Trees and Queens of the Stone Age, as one half of The Gutter Twins (with Greg Dulli of Afghan Whigs) and, most recently, dueting with Isobel Campbell on the three acclaimed albums they made together. However, tonight he is with an accomplished four-piece rock band, giving an airing to songs from his well-received new album, Blues Funeral.

Public Image Ltd So, John Lydon and Public Image Ltd are back on the road again after a long break. And it’s good to see that this is not a nostalgia band, but a talented new line up with a ground-breaking new album to promote.

Michael Kiwanuka Every now and then you go to a gig that you’re not overly excited about and then, a couple of hours later, you walk out of the venue spellbound by what you've just seen and heard. It’s as if you’ve witnessed history, something magical that futuristically will be written in annuls of time. Monday night at the Wulfrun Hall Wolverhampton, was – in my humble opinion – one such occasion.

Gary Numan Long ago, in times of innocent, analogue angst, electro-punk dystopian dynamo, Gary Numan, Tube Way Army’s alter-ego frontman, debuted on Top Of The Pops, 1979 with ‘Are Friends Electric’ and soon following with ‘Cars’. His Alice Cooper/Klaus Kinsky Nosferatu hybrid mascara looks and disembodied stage anti-presence both polarised and mesmerised in equal measure.

Apocalyptica As my age progresses I find myself experimenting with different music and becoming much more open-minded. There was once a time I detested metal, there was even a time I could just about handle the sound of a real guitar. And even that was Dire Straits - Money For Nothing! But here I am many years later in the pit of a rock gig at Wulfrun Hall, and loving every second of it. Only this one has a twist. For those that know Finnish Metal Band Apocalyptica, will be aware that guitars do not feature in any of their stage shows. Instead their chosen instrument is the humble Classical Cello. Cello and Metal how can that possibly work?

Crystal Castles Is it the onset of boredom settling in or is a gradual feeling of anticipation creeping over me? If it is the former then it’s a feeling that had better dissipate soon. And the latter, well that’s surely a good sign. Considering the 11pm curfew I find myself clock watching, observing minutes slowly disappearing into the depths of... Ahh, finally Crystal Castles are here.

Frank Turner A large crowd of sweaty, friendly, enthusiastic fans were there to greet him and his 2 supports of the night. The first, a comedy-musician going by the name of ‘Beans on Toast’ warmed the crowd up nicely with a fantastic blend of gritty, down to earth comedy and some truly melodic songs, a lot of which echoed the semi-anarchic folk-punk we were all waiting to hear from Frank.

Starsailor There are many mysteries in life, and one remains why Starsailor are still playing small venues like the Wulfrun. This especially true when bands such as Keane play much larger venues. Oh well, the Wulfrun it is, and oddly for a crowd comprising mainly middle-aged couples the security seems especially tight. All punters are searched and for the first time in my life I was asked to remove my car keys from my pocket which was then closely inspected by said security man.
