Gabrielle The spectacular venue otherwise known as Leeds Town Hall gave a capacity crowd warm welcome to Gabrielle who was calling in on Saturday night as part of her 10 date ‘Under my Skin’ tour following the release late last year of her 6th studio album of the same name. It would be fair to say that both she and the crowd enjoyed every minute of it...

Roy Harper “As long as I can skip I will be coming back” were Roy Harper’s closing remarks as he playfully skipped off the stage as if he were a five year old. Heart warming and poignant it was a fitting end to what is billed as ‘The Last Tour: 50 Years of Monumental Classics’.

Nouvelle Vague This tour is being billed as the Acoustic Shows Tour so tonight Nouvelle Vague are a stripped down four piece consisting of acoustic guitar, keyboards, a fine collection of hand-held percussion instruments plus a melodica. It’s fair to say that the boys haven’t gone overboard as regards stage costume; functional workaday jeans and trainers seem to do the job. Whereas Melaine, in a black velvet backless dress and Élodie in a long split skirt with lace top, look chic, classy and like they’re ready to tango in a 1920s Parisian nightclub.

Billy Bragg

Tonight's performer has always been outspoken. A revolutionary spokesman for a generation, highlighting social injustice and rallying for the cause. And he's been doing this for thirty odd years. To a pretty much sold out Birmingham Town Hall, and galvanised by recent 'events' welcome to Mr Billy Bragg.

Ani Difranco At a seated Birmingham Town Hall, with hardly half of the seats filled, a man with long long dreadlocks took to the stage to introduce the evening. I’ve seen Ani Difranco over 15 times now, and this wasn’t a face I recognized, but in recent years I’ve seen her less and less, so perhaps this is the new norm.

Agnes Obel YES YES YES! AN ALL WOMEN SET! (I couldn't help but hop excitedly from foot to foot at this. I'm so tired of all male backing, even for women! Nice one, Agnes!) her crew consisted of a cellist, oboe player, Agnes on keyboards, and another woman on drum machine. All dressed in white - they appeared formidable.

Heaven 17 So thirty five years ago. This band released an album. It wasn't a hit and a single got banned. Boom. Their other guise had morphed out of one electronica band that had a minor (sic) degree of success (and who are still touring today) before developing into something new. But success did come their way. In bucket loads. So welcome tonight to the delectable Town Hall in Birmingham, the British Electronic Foundation (BEF) and their 'alter ego' if you like, Heaven 17.

Fish It’s Christmas! Well indeed the lights are festively shining and the punters in town for the German Market, so it must be Christmas in Birmingham. And temptingly we walk past the food and alcohol to make it to the Town Hall, resisting the temptations, as tonight we're in the sold out performance of one Derek William Dick aka Fish, with his Last Return to Childhood tour.

Joanne Shaw Taylor It’s almost a year since Joanne Shaw Taylor’s last homecoming gig at Birmingham’s Town Hall. Circumstances had conspired against me catching her act for a few years, so I’d been looking forward to this one for a while.

Difford & Tilbrook Tonight to the delectable Town Hall in Birmingham and a journey through the entertaining lives of two classic songsmiths. In the late 70s, early 80s the band that featured these guys turned out hit after hit - the lyrics such that these two individuals were deemed to be the Lennon and McCartney of their generation. The chap who played the keyboards tottered off on his own journey of ‘The Tube’ and ‘Later..’ and jazz, while the band became these core duo and a rotating shift of other musicians. So for something different tonight, part Q&A, part acoustic trip through their music journey - welcome ‘The At Odds Couple' - welcome Difford & Tilbrook.

A Time and Place This year marks the centenary of the start of the First Word War. 100 years ago in a totally different world, that it so many ways we can’t relate to.  The first mass produced cars (by Ford) only started in 1914, the telephone (as in landline) was still new technology, radio even newer and the first national broadcasting service - the BBC was 8 years away from formation. News was through newspapers or cinema screenings. But the very real human stories of the time still resonate today and tonight are shown through a powerful musical project: - A Time and Place: Musical Meditations on the First World War.
