The Quireboys On arrival at Robin 2 in Bilston, I awaited the entrance of fascinating act, The Quireboys. Talented young artist Louis Coupe (lead singer of The Rooz) was on stage setting the scene and getting the audience ready for the rock styled acoustics of the main act. Firstly on the guitar then playing the piano this support was an entertaining artist warming up the audience nicely.

Steve Cropper Walking into Woody’s bar at The Robin 2, and seeing a genuine legend propping up the bar, chatting with the punters is one of the more surreal moments of my life*. But, as Steve Cropper (for it was he) was to say later “I’m just an old man, having some fun”.

Roger Chapman 'Back from Retirement' claimed the billing. Not normally a selling point for Rock'n'Roll, but when Roger Chapman's involved, it's worth taking a bit of notice.

Strawbs Strawbs have been around in various guises since the late 1960’s. Among the large number of musicians passing through the ranks of the band have been celebrated chanteuse Sandy Denny and prog-rock keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman. Band leader Dave Cousins is the only original survivor, but the current line up includes key members from the 1970s, Dave Lambert (guitar) and Chas Cronk (bass). Versions of the band have been touring on and off for years, but what makes this tour particularly exciting is that it is the full-on electric band, rather than the more frequently seen stripped-down acoustic ensemble. Also, keeping it in the family, Rick Wakeman’s son, Adam, is playing keyboards.

Gong For those not familiar with the music of Gong, they might possibly be described as a kind of jazzy existential cosmic rock band. To some extent their style and outlook might be compared with Hawkwind, but the material is rather more strange, complex and steeped in a mythology that involves a continuing story (over several albums) about a search for enlightenment. If you think that this all sounds a bit too serious, then think again. There's a lot of humour in their songs. And, as tonight proves, Gong's music (and their performance) is incredibly enjoyable and terrific fun.

Half Man Half Biscuit The Robin 2 has to be one of the hidden gems for live music in the Midlands. It’s easy to get to, nearby bus and metro station, and if you drive the car park is next door and free. For those who travel there is even a hotel within the venue and a room with breakfast starts at £35. Can it get any better? Well yes it can, you can add some cracking music, and the list of future gigs offers more than the usual tribute bands you’d expect from a venue like this...
