Moseley Folk Festival 2018 The festival god's blessed the 13th Moseley Folk Festival with glorious sunshine for the whole three days, which is only fair and right seeing as how they damned Moseley’s sister festival, Lunar to a torrents of rain for much of that weekend. And no matter how much rain makes for the "proper" festival experience, being dry, warm to hot (possible for the last time this year), makes for a much more pleasant festival. So karma readdressed and lucky 13 for some and all, Moseley got under way on the afternoon of Friday 31st August.

The Levellers

Time to party! Yep we're looking forward to this one as we make our way over to Wolverhampton on out third gig in three nights! Gigging people appear to be in two places tonight, either at the Genting Arena for Duran Duran, or, with a total left field and alternative edge to have a good old blast and party on this Beautuful Nights tour with the rag-tag-bobble-tail crew that are The Levellers.

The Levellers Anticipation was high for this one. The 4th time of seeing The Levellers and they’d only let me down once, V99 when they inexplicably played a mid-afternoon slot to a crowd steel reeling from Mel C (‘I am an antichrist, I am a Sporty Spice’) and their set was cut short on the instructions of headliners Manic Street Preachers. Far outweighing this was a Brid Spa gig in ’95 that is still talked about amongst my fellow gig goers that night and a storming headline slot at this year’s Galtres Festival.

Galtres Festival Galtres opened with Doncaster band and personal friends Bang Bang Romeo, their first performance on a main festival stage. No surprises in that they nailed it. Just a shame more people couldn't see them due to the site opening not long before they came on stage. I spoke to a few people that night who could hear the band from the queue and were gutted they didn't get to see them.

The Levellers Even for the uninitiated a cursory glance at The Levellers' current tour set-list (and lyrics) suggests a band who embrace a shrewd socio/political agenda with a passion. After all, the clue’s in the name. ‘The Levellers’ campaigned for religious tolerance and broader suffrage during the British Civil War (yes, it all kicked-off in Scotland). And, scanning both published and blog reviews of their current album ‘Static On The Airwaves’ demonstrates not only feral loyalty but an admirable, dispassionate intelligence. That’s some fan-base to have on your side. As was made bruisingly, bone-crunchingly evident at this rammed 02 gig. Perhaps not so much of the intelligence bit tonight though!
