Wand There are few bands that master dynamics quite like Wand. Performing at the Hare & Hounds in Birmingham, the LA outfit brought their music to life with the spirited energy that they've become renowned for.

Black Peaks I love the Hare & Hounds as a venue but never really associated it with anything heavier than indie tonight that changes as one the most equally anticipated packet of 2018 comes rolling through town.

The Parrots The Parrots have long garnered themselves a reputation as a band that prove to be as wonderful as they are wild at any given performance. Energetic, engaging, and anthemic to boot, theirs is a show that can bring even the dreariest of evenings to life.

RDE and Setting Son Records Presents The August Showcase Welcome to the latest instalment of ‘Stop being lazy – it’s Sunday Funday!’ If the local music scene has taught me anything, it’s that there is always, always something interesting happening on a Sunday night. Nap Eyes There is a short change over time before Nap Eyes take to the stage. I was fortunate enough to catch the Nova Scotian quartet at last year’s Moseley Folk Festival which led me to seek them out on their return to King's Heath. They open up the set with Judgement taken from the latest album, I’m Bad Now, with their usual laid back ease and understated approach to music making.

Shonen Knife On Sunday night I was pulled back in time, up into space, and transformed into an Osaka Ramone. Didn’t you go? Are you jealous? You should be! All three acts were excellent. They followed one another beautifully, but were diverse enough to give three wildly different experiences.

Sunflower Bean Bizarrely, I’d never been instructed to ‘step into the room on the right’ whilst attending any one of a number of gigs at the Hare & Hounds in King's Heath, but I was on this night. The fact that it’s twice the size of the other room is testament to the sudden popularity of New York’s newest rock trio, Sunflower Bean.

Albert Hammond Jr t’s becoming a regular treat to see musical heroes and icons playing at my local pub the Hare & Hounds. The venue has gone from strength to strength over the past ten years producing a wide and varied music programme to suit all adult tastes. It makes sense then that Albert Hammond Jr, guitarist of THE coolest band of the past 20 years, The Strokes, would make a stop here on his solo headline tour.

Roland Gift So way back in the 80’s, as one classic Brum band ‘dissolved’ another one was born. This new band did rather well,  worldwide success, and a couple of platinum albums beckoned before they too went their separate ways. But no matter, as tonight, in an exclusively snug venue, their lead singer plays in his own right, playing the old and new - it is the immense vocal talent of Roland Gift, of Fine Young Cannibals fame.

Kiran Leonard I came to Kiran Leonard via hearing him on Marc Riley’s excellent Radio 6 programme. It’s always good to catch new talent when it’s fresh and before it becomes famous. I wish I had a better track record in this respect, because the only famous band I’ve genuinely managed to catch in its true infancy (nappy stage) was the Human League. And that was a long time ago.
