Brian Fallon & The Howling Weather Brian Fallon walks on stage full of smiles with his band The Howling Weather, which features the familiar face of Ian Perkins, and they quickly burst into ‘A Wonderful Life’. After the song someone within the crowd responds by shouting “where is the checked shirt Brian” to which he responds with how he brought the polka dot shirt out especially for Manchester, one of the many exclusive treats he has up his sleeve for us. Next up on the setlist is the catchy ‘Rosemary’ and one of the brand new songs ‘Forget Me Not’ which goes down a treat.

Sleepwalkers by Brian Fallon Is Sleepwalkers the album to push me kicking and screaming back into Fallon’s brand of Americana? Maybe... Opening track If Your Prayers Don’t Get to Heaven is vintage Brian Fallon. Catchy, melodic and deceivingly simple, the New Jersey songwriter has clearly lost none of his soul. Indeed, this album is more upbeat generally than pretty much anything Fallon has been involved in since the Gaslight Anthem’s American Slang.

The Gaslight Anthem The first two words that come to mind when I hear the words ‘The Gaslight Anthem’ are ‘cult following’. Whilst they never seem to be part of the mainstream music consciouness, they have garnered a huge following that has made them one of the most popular rock bands of the past decade. That cult following is definitely evident in Manchester’s Apollo this Monday evening.

The Gaslight Anthem The lights dim and the sound of the Van Halen song Jump blasts through the Academy's speakers before a load roar from the crowd greet the band. Proceeding to launch into The Spirit Of Jazz, The Gaslight Anthem are incredibly tight and they are on top form. Brian Fallon and the guys seem to be throughly enjoying themselves tonight throwing in light hearted jokes and humble talk in-between songs.

The Gaslight Anthem Ahhhh – the perfect Saturday nights entertainment… Popping down the Chinese for a takeaway, nipping into the off licence for a 4 pack and grabbing the latest movie from Blockbusters. Splendid! Unfortunately that’s the opening paragraph from the other website I write for – LifeofaDullard.com and thus bears no relation to the splendid night I spent at the O2 Academy Birmingham rocking out to the tremendous Gaslight Anthem.

The Gaslight Anthem Polar Bear Club are on first, a fun hardcore-ish band in the 90's sense of the word whose songs largely run into one another. In defence, it's terribly early: 7pm starts are no one's friend. There is some weakness in the vocals but the guitars are strong and clever and there's a lot of energy thrown about on what is an otherwise spectacularly crappy day in the Midlands. They play a new track, Take Me To The Town, which intros like an eighties musical montage colliding with 90s rock. In the good way.
