Dry the River Dry the River still feel like one of those bands that is secret hidden gem – a cluster of stars on the ascendant that only their die-hard fans are lucky enough to have discovered in their early days of gigging around the UK. However, with a sold out show at The Forum, London and a second album recently released it seems the tides are finally turning for this London alt-rock band gaining the recognition and adoration that they deserve.

Alkaline Trio When I entered the Forum it was hard not to notice the shear beauty of the venue, Manchester certainly has its fair share of great venues but being my first time here it will certainly leave an impression on me. Happy Mondays Bez walks out holding what appears to be a stick with a doll hanging from the end of it and announcing like James Brown's old hype-man... "25 years of history you old bastards... Power to the People". Next to enter the stage is Rowetta. The whole evening seems to have certain M25-rave-feel about it and as if to accentuate this, she comes out swinging illuminous balls around her head in a festival-yo-yo-slash-fire-thing-style. By now Bez's familiar strut is beginning to get into it's flow. And then, the loudest cheer of the night so far... Shaun Ryder walks out showing that he is, despite many people's assumptions, a man of the times... by smoking an electronic cigarette onstage. This is 1988 nostalgia with a very 2013 twist.

Hit The Deck Festival The second annual Hit The Deck Festival, a heavily sponsored all-day indoor festival focused on the genres of metal, rock, emo and hardcore (both post and present), rolled up in Nottingham on a very wet April weekend. But that wasn't going to dampen anyone's spirits anytime soon. Held across five stages in five different and very intimate venues, you'd do good to find another event that offers so many amazing bands, both big and small, for such a reasonable price.
