V Festival, Weston Park, Stafford For years, the chart topping foundations of V festival has drawn in the mainstream music crowds, the playlist hand-picked when ripe by the elitists of the industry; put together with the ease of celebrity status. Yet, this year, they seemed to have missed their quota amongst the to-be-seen at summer events loosing a third of ticket sales, with something lacking from their line up.

The Charlatans After a successful start featuring Paolo Nutini, ‘Summer In The City’ had its first Saturday night show headlined by Britpop stalwarts The Charlatans. Fresh off entertaining gig-goers at Glastonbury, Tim Burgess and co. arrived in a sunny Manchester to face a small but noisy crowd, ready to celebrate the heydays of indie music.

The Charlatans I first saw The Charlatans waaaaaaayyy back in 1990 on a bleak Wednesday night, in Leeds at some tiny little club which housed 1000 people tops. Halcyon days. They'd literally just released 'The Only One I Know' and Tim Burgess was an impressionable floppy haired twenty three year old with mahoosive lips. They oooozed enthusiasm, potential and passion before what has now been a 25 year journey into the glorious world of the music industry. Interspersed in this last quarter century are colossal performances like Knebworth in 96 (Oasis) and a headline slot at Scotland’s T in the Park when they were bang on top of their game.

The Charlatans As Tim Burgess looked out at the bouncing crowd filling the Apollo from underneath his dyed peroxide blonde fringe and launched into the opening lyric from ‘North Country Boy’ with steely force and confidence, I knew that this was going to be one of those gigs. Playing their 1997 hit album Tellin’ Stories in its entirety, The Charlatans brought the house down on Friday, leaving their audience for the most part in a state of shock and awe.

The Charlatans t was a pleasure to come back to this perfect venue in Birmingham for a night of The Charlatans. I was frighteningly delighted in the run up to the gig to learn that Shaun Ryder was support for the night! This was the closing night to their tour which started in Newcastle on the 7th Oct. They also kick straight into a European tour on 25th Oct that begins in Amsterdam and finishes with Hong Kong and Japan dates. They are busy boys and I have to say that I think it showed on the night. The Charlatans for me represent my youth, when indie ruled the world and baggy northern styled songs battled southern Fred perry fashionistas to rule the dance floor. In the days before I had to listen to people discuss the X-factor as though discussing modern art or politics. So the thought of a night with the Tim and Shaun gave me a little warm glow.

V Festival Weston Park Stafford If day one was all about catching an eclectic mix artists (and in hindsight having one too many beers) day two was about the golden oldies with the likes of the ‘Charlatans’, ‘Weller’ and the ‘Phonics’ all performing. The sun had his hat on, pass was securely round my neck and all was right with the World – it was gonna be a good un!
