PINS You wait ages for three female fronted (in the case of two of tonight’s bill 100% female line ups too) bands and then three come along at once. Okay, I know there are other testicle free groups out there (and there always has been) but given the fact that ladies make up roughly 50% of the population it’s a never ending source of puzzlement that you see relatively few women only or women dominated bands. Why? Beats me. Answers on a XX chromosome please.

THEBAND These are heady... Bulls Heady in fact... ahem... times for the Birmingham music scene. In fact in 25 years or so of gig going in the second city I can’t recall a time when there was as much good shit going on than right here, right now. We’ve got the bands, the venues and, as tonight underlines, the publications (online and ‘real’) in the shape of Brum Notes (an honourable mention must go the marvellous Counteract Magazine too who’ve also pimped this show).

Jenn Bostic Behold ye who forswore to venture into this cold, gentle night and weep mightily for your perfidy! Perhaps you’d given up ever believing that an artist of disarming charm, of engaging, folksy apple-pie sincerity could also sing like an angel breathing thunderbolts? ‘In Nashville,’ Jenn Bostic, comments wryly, ‘they think I'm a little bit too Pop for Country.’ Well, yes and no. Her songs are intelligent, crafted Country power-Pop ballads for sure and mightily sung too.

Elmo Sexwhistle Headlining was the gorgeously dressed and precipitously fringed Elmo Sexwhistle. Honestly, the names parents choose back in the mid 80s! It’s default Keytar/keyboards again but back-lined by some seriously focused good old guitar and bass. From the opening brief hammer blast of electro funk minimalism segueing into what seemed a pre-programmed interpretation of a spacecraft being sick the set was an inspired poseur potpourri of giddy eccentricity.
