Clutch It’s been a while since I’ve been completely blown away by a support band, and actually the last Clutch support that really did that was Clutch when they supported themselves as The Bakerton Group, but tonight both supports managed to do exactly that.

Volbeat It might be a chilly mid-November Sunday night but Manchester's Academy is bursting at the seems. Metal fans, young and old, have gathered eagerly to see Danish band Volbeat on their Outlaw Gentlemen and Shady Ladies tour.

Throwing Muses Throwing Muses were one of the iconic indie / alternative rock bands of the 1980s / 90s and, unusually, they were once fronted by two strong women who were the band's songwriters / singers / guitarists: Kristin Hersh and Tanya Donelly. Donelly left the band in 1991 for a career with The Breeders and Belly, then solo. Now she's back, providing not only the support act, but also joining her former band for several songs.

Feeder Feeder have been around long enough that they might well be entitled to feel jaded by the music business, but if they ever have been it didn't show. It was an energetic band that walked out to perform in front of a large and impressive light show, clearly still loving what they do. On tour with their 2012 album Generation Freakshow, their new music isn’t a miraculous reinvention. It's still grungy alternative guitar-based indie rock. It’s a case of if it ain't broke, don’t fix it, much to the delight of the hardcore contingent of (most likely) lifelong fans in the room.
