Howard Jones It’s been well over thirty years since Howard Jones asked us to “throw off our mental chains”; to challenge our preconceived ideas. How time flies by. In support of his brand new ‘Best Of’ Howard Jones release entitled ‘BEST (1983-2017)’, and now with all new and extended Electric Band, he's put doing a series of five shows across the UK, including tonight's at Birmingham's o2 Institute.

Hookworms Hookworms are a five-piece Leeds-based band who have been getting some great reviews and radio play (Radio 6’s Marc Riley being a particular enthusiast) and they are renowned for making a full-on racket. Tonight they are playing close to base at Hebden Bridge’s Trades Club and a good number of their fans have turned out to see them. It’s the first gig of their current tour, with the next one scheduled for their home city at Leeds Brudenell Social Club (reputedly their favourite venue) this coming weekend.

Bad Touch It’s almost panto season and tonight we have ‘Beauty & The Beast’ in the shape of Mollie Marriott and Bad Touch, live at the Brudenell Social Club in Leeds. Classic Rock n’ Roll tales as old as time. I’m back at my favourite independent music venue in the North – Leeds Brudenell Social Club for a night of Classic Rock that could have been made in the 70’s. We have the long hair, flares, boots, beards and loud guitars – we also have beer at £1.99 but that’s not as a throwback gimmick, or even because it’s Black Friday. This is a normal night here, a social music club deep in the mainly student community of Leeds. Now having 3 stages and every night is booked, it’s so great to see it thriving when many others are closing down.

The Divine Comedy A cold and windy November evening in Leeds saw a welcome return of The Divine Comedy, a great British band fronted by their founder Neil Hannon. Many people have said that their best days are behind them, but if last night’s performance was anything to go by, they couldn’t be more wrong.

Lost Horizons Tonight is a step into the unknown to see a new band, Lost Horizons, performing songs from their debut album ‘Ojalá’ (meaning ‘hopefully’ in Spanish). I’m prompted to check them out as Lost Horizons is a return to playing music for a musical hero, Simon Raymonde, formerly of The Cocteau Twins and the man behind the revered Bella Union record label. Lost Horizons is a joint project with drummer Richie Thomas, formerly of 1980s post-punk band Dif Juz and a guy with an impressive musical pedigree, having toured with iconic acts such as The Jesus and Mary Chain and Felt, as well as The Cocteau Twins.

Slow Readers Club Multiple generations packed out one of the UK’s most unique venues as Slow Readers Club rocked the boat at Thekla in Bristol on 17th November. The Mancunian four-piece rolled into the city’s cargo-ship-turned-music-hall halfway through a sold-out UK tour, and were greeted by stacks of fans who were chomping at the bit to see the headliners right from the start.

Deaf Havana I have to say, at the outset, that up until the week of this gig I have never listened to any output by the main band on this tour. They had been recommended to me by my stepson who is a big fan. So I gave them a listen and, apart from the early more screamy stuff I really quite liked them. So it was with a certain amount of anticipation that myself and said stepson turned up to Leeds Beckett for Deaf Havana.

Alice Cooper When the announcement came through that Alice Cooper, the man, the myth, the legend was coming to the Birmingham Arena it was a moment similar to the classic scene in 'Wayne's World' falling on the floor and shouting "We're not worthy" so you could tell this was an electrifying moment.
