Deaf Havana It’s unseasonably mild for mid-February, and I turn up to the Institute expecting to wander straight in, wearing short-sleeves. However, I’m faced with a queue snaking past two side roads and round a bend. Short sleeves were not a good idea. There’s a cool breeze in the air. Tonight I'm here for a batch of band that I'm looking forward to - headlined by Deaf Havana.

Trivium If you had survived the Valentine’s Day Anthrax gig there is every chance you would have been returning to see Trivium tonight. One thing that Trivium are known for is being able to bring one hell of a support. In the past their tours have seen the likes of Children Of Bodom, In Flames and As I Lay Dying grace line ups. With that in mind fans are queuing up in their numbers even well before the 7pm doors to cast their eyes and ears over tonight's too.

Julian Cope Tonight we’re in the delightful and friendly comedy venue that is The Glee Birmingham to see an artist with who own true unique style. This dude does it HIS way. Singer-songwriter, musician, author, antiquarian - his take on life is truly unique, his music and lyrics as eloquent as they are sartorial - his spoken word crazy, mad and bang on the money in the same sentence. Welcome to the world of the Archdruid himself - Julian H. Cope.

SkunkAnansie Do you ever get that feeling that you've just been a part of something really special, something really relevant? Saturday night, Brixton Academy, Skunk Anansie felt exactly like that. And judging by the crowd, it felt like that for 1000's of others too. 'Fascism..stop it DEAD in its track!' Skin's words resonate through me days later. Skunk Anansie have always been a special band, always pushing the boundaries and breaking barriers; they smashed it back in the early days, and they still smash it in 2017.

Toy With its quirky small club atmosphere and friendliness, Hebden Bridge’s Trades Club is rapidly becoming one of my all-time favourite live music venues. Over four days they’ve been hosting ‘A Heavenly Weekend in Hebden Bridge’, featuring artists on that label. Saturday night features Brighton psych rockers Toy and up-and-coming shoegazey dreamers Britain.

SNFU Tonight’s gig in Birmingham is the 5th gig of SNFU’s 33-date ‘Euro Frostbite Tour 2017’. They are a seasoned band, having formed in 1981, with singer Ken Chinn (Mr. Chi Pig) being the only original member left in the current lineup. SNFU’s sound has had various labels, from skate punk to melodic hardcore. Even though they hail from Canada, they have a similar sound to a lot of West Coast punk groups from the 90s era and are cited with influencing groups such as fellow Canadians D.O.A.

Fields of the Nephilim So to the main event, Fields of the Nephilim, The Nephilim, The Neff, Carl McCoy. I first saw them back in 1987 in some tiny polytechnic, and came out covered in flour, ringing ears but with complete love. They rarely tour these days, no, correction, they never tour and rarely play, in England we’re lucky to get two of three gigs a year and I had high hopes tonight. I wasn’t disappointed.

Frank Turner Anyone who knows me will know I love a good name drop so let’s get that out of the way first. I was lucky enough to be involved with a live interview with Frank Turner on Sine FM the afternoon of the gig. I mention this not only for shameful name dropping but also because one of the things we touched on was support acts for the tour. Frank hand picks his support acts and they are invariably worth watching.

Sisters Of Mercy Darkened smelly, smokey clubs, with sticky floors and DJ's playing vinyl from up on high. The sub-culture of an 80s scene - which by identity, you could belong. And the DJ plays. 'Floorshow.' We young teenagers dance, immersed in the churning beat. My introduction, way to many years ago, to tonight's headliners - a welcome return to Andrew Eldritch and The Sisters of Mercy.

New Model Army On this chilly and damp November evening Winter is coming. In fact Winter is here. Winter will be on show tonight as Sullivan brings his army to Birmingham, to the main room at the o2 Institute, and to the family that follow. 'Bring me the snowfall. Bring me the cold wind. Bring me Winter.' Which is exactly what New Model Amy will do tonight..

PJ Harvey The force of nature that is PJ Harvey has not been one to do much touring of the provinces in recent years, but that has changed this year as she undertakes a UK tour centred around her last two albums, ‘Let England Shake’ (2011) and ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ (2016). These albums have been part of a great burst of activity from Ms Harvey, marking a more political stance, examining war, Britain’s history and wider global concerns. These are deeply personal albums, but then so are all of PJ Harvey’s records.

Michael Kiwanuka Right now there is a buzz around Michael Kiwanuka. A North Londoner in his late twenties he is promoting his second album released in the summer to critical acclaim. Twice nominated for the Mercury prize, life should be looking up for this accomplished guitarist and soulful singer-songwriter. Manchester Ritz, with a 1500 hundred capacity, is the final show of the UK leg. It is a sell-out and it is buzzing.

Heaven 17 So thirty five years ago. This band released an album. It wasn't a hit and a single got banned. Boom. Their other guise had morphed out of one electronica band that had a minor (sic) degree of success (and who are still touring today) before developing into something new. But success did come their way. In bucket loads. So welcome tonight to the delectable Town Hall in Birmingham, the British Electronic Foundation (BEF) and their 'alter ego' if you like, Heaven 17.
