Catfish and the Bottlemen So even though it’s the biggest venue in my home town (4000 capacity give or take) I’m not a huge fan of The Dome. It just seems the wrong shape and bands have often struggled with the sound there. It is after all a sports hall. I’ve seen Weller, Manics, Levellers, Faithless and The Beautiful South struggle there. The only band I’ve seen really nail it have been Kasabian. So given this was also my first time seeing Catfish and the Bottlemen stepping up to a larger room it promised to be an interesting evening.

The Black Keys The packed Apollo crowd of 3,500 revellers were lapping it up. From the minute they kicked off with 'Howling for You' through to the oh so catchy ‘Gold on the Ceiling’ the crowd went bonkers. ‘Little Black Submarine’ with its beautiful vocal melody and mesmerising guitar solo, was most definitely the live performance highlight from the new album.

Kasabian December is a great time for going to a gig. Christmas is a coming, everyones in the mood for a party, the beers are flowing and if you're going to see the right band then you're in for a belter. So that poses the question... Were Kasabian the right band, to whip the crowd into a frenzy, to get everyone singing in response to the front mans instruction and generally get things rocking? Abso-blummin-lutely!!! There's no-one better.

Reef Ladies up and down the country clamour to obtain the miracle anti aging cream that Gary Stringer and the boys from Reef have evidently using during their self imposed hiatus from the music scene for the past 7 years... A spokesman for the band refused to comment on the boys lack of aging, although reports are now in that they have been adopting some vehicular method of cheating the space/time continuum. Evidently this vehicle must have been a 3 seater, as the aging process has been a little less kind to the Bass player Jack Bessant.

Flyleaf With the music they play connecting with people across so many genres, its’ easy to forget that they are classed as a ‘Christian’ band, although I read that they don’t like being referred to as just one genre which I personally like as I really think religion and music should always remain separate. Just as the waiting crowd was starting to get a little restless, the lights went up, and beautiful front lady Lacey Mosley walked onto the stage in a stunning red floor length dress and black DMs. Opening with ‘Fully Alive’ from their self titled debut album, everyone seemed to take a step backwards in awe at the power of the voice coming out of such a petite person.

Them Crooked Vultures By the time Them Crooked Vultures were about due to take the stage the 02 academy was completely crammed full. Their album “Them Crooked Vultures” has had warm reviews since its release but the anticipation in the crowd suggested that it’s not music fans that have cast the judgement. Normally when bands come out the venue will cut the background music and dim/turn off the lights but in this case Dave Grohl simply walked across the back of the stage and waved to the crowd, for a split second there could have been confusion that he was a roadie, but once the crowd realised who it was the room erupted with cheers. The other member of Them Crooked Vultures soon followed in a similar relaxed and unassuming way. Before their arrival the simple stage set up revealed nothing as to the bands identity, all except a vulture perched atop the drummer’s microphone. When all four band members were on the stage the whole place stood to cheer them. It was like a standing ovation before they had started.

Paramore "Wow! This is the biggest show we’ve ever played!’’ said the 20-year-old Hayley Williams as she looked out at the 13,000 strong fans. Many of the front row had queued for hours and a few even camped over-night to be close to their idols. Paramore from Franklin, Tennessee formed in 2004, and with two songs on the massive Hollywood hit film 'Twilight', even being nominated for a Grammy for Best New Artist in 2008 proved the reason why they have such a growing popularity on stage at the NIA in Birmingham on the 11th December 2009.

Kasabian There aren’t many superlatives that haven’t been used to describe Kasabian over the past year, especially when it comes to their live performance. In our last review of them at their De Montfort Hall gig we described them as “an enormous sound and euphoric uplifting performances combining the pomp of the Stone Roses and Primal Scream and the showmanship of Faithless” We were in for a treat.

Kasabian Kasabian are quite simply one of the best live bands around. Their enormous sound and euphoric uplifting performances combine the pomp of the Stone Roses and Primal Scream and the showmanship of Faithless. Put simply they rock! Thus it was that Gig Junkies Head honcho and I, found ourselves at the salubrious surround of De Montfort Hall, in Leicester – Kasabian’s home town – on the opening night of their summer tour to celebrate the release of their new album West Ryder Pauper Lunatic Asylum. Coincidentally it was the same season that their beloved Leicester City were crowned Division 1 Champions. It was gonna be messy!
