Mumford & Sons

Out with the gentlemanly waistcoats and in with the grungy denim shirt-jean combo, the freshly transformed British quartet have re-categorised themselves within the rock music genre. The convincingly celtic rooted folk band Mumford & Sons have stripped back the banjo and string ensemble and opted for electric rock with their 2015 album Wilder Mind. Their new material has been saturated in the clashing of symbols, hard hitting drums, and twangs of electric guitars.

Chelsea Wolfe

How do I start with the love of my life? Chelsea Wolfe, I've been an avid fan of her music since a friend of mine sent me a link to her second album 'Apokalysis' in 2010 saying and I quote “check out this girls screaming on Pale on Pale, amazing”. Ever since my love affair with Chelsea, oh and her incredible music, has more then blossomed into an unhealthy obsession...

Judas Priest

Local lads Judas Priest certainly know how to play to a home crowd. The stage is shrouded in the best curtain I have ever seen; showing an industrial skyline at night of the factories that inspired the genre it simply stated ‘Welcome to the Home of British Steel’ in the corner. Before the curtain drop the lighting changed to red illuminating the sky on the curtain to reflect the origins of the Black Country name.

New Order And here we are in a rather busy, rather wet Wolverhampton to see one band who just keep on turning up. In their previous guise they came indie cult legends, with the ultimate sad twist of fate. In their current guise - they started of with one of the iconic dance floor 12 inch classics and after a while, went on to have hit after hit after hit. Lulls and hiatus’s, well they’re back with a shiny new album ‘Music Complete’ in tow. No blue Monday, a very warm welcome Tuesday to New Order.

Charlotte Carpenter

Moody moog sounds of Break begin the headline set from Charlotte Carpenter and band. The three-piece, two guitars, drums and a mass of effects draw the nicely filled venue into respectful silence immediately. The questioning emotive track builds with brewing, swirling soundscapes before it dissolves into a deserved round of applause. Meantime, also from the new E.P. The Fault Line follows and with heads beginning to nod approval amongst the crowd - it’s quickly apparent the new songs are as good, if not better, than music from the four previous E.P.’s.

Uncle Acid and the deadbeats

Some of the mystery surrounding cult psychedelic-doom-rockers Uncle Acid and the deadbeats is beginning to lift, as publicity photographs of the band finally emerge. But after tonight’s Manchester Gorilla gig, where the band members are shrouded in hair, smoke and shadow, you still wouldn’t recognise them in the street. But the heavy vibes stay memorable and many ear drums will be ringing well through the night.

Everything Everything Formed in late 2007, the alt-pop-rock band ‘Everything Everything’ (EE) have released three albums to date: ‘Man Alive’, 2010, ‘Arc’ in 2013 and ‘Get to Heaven’ in the summer of this year; which, lyrically speaking, Higgs refers to as a “horror bible”. The dark and often formidably violent lyrics “I’m going to kill a stranger, so don’t’ you be a stranger.” written by Higgs, contrast dramatically with the bright pop-like sound which, when performed lived is highly stylised and sensory in effect, intensified by the blaring lights and panels of colour that lit up The Leadmill, Sheffield on Monday night. The band consists of members Jonathan Higgs, lead singer, Jeremy Pritchard, bassist, drummer Michael Spearman, Alex Robertshaw, lead guitarist, and touring musician Pete Sené on keyboards.

Ella Eyre The appropriately entitled album tour, Feline, fittingly suits the youthful Ella Eyre’s feisty stage presence and roaring vocals as she illuminates Birmingham’s O2 Academy alongside a duo of fierce female vocalists backing her on the concluding night of her tour.

Skindred

It's not often you go to a gig that has four acts on in one night, and you can definitely cut that number in half again if you can say that none of them are filler. Well on paper I can definitely say tonight is one of those special cases where we get the later.

John French The Magic Band’s ‘United Kingdom’ tour offer was taken up by English venues only but a handful of Scots fans joined the good people of Preston for a memorable night in the north of England. The Continental is a small, friendly venue situated on the banks of the River Ribble. The hall is attached to a bar and restaurant which dealt perfectly with my requests for cask ale and vegetarian food. To make things even better, Magic Band members mixed with devotees before the show, adding to the already relaxed and intimate atmosphere.

Darlia On a Friday night where the winter weather and cold seemed to be setting in, Darlia took to the stage and gave nothing more than an red hot explosive set. The Blackpool trio are touring off the back of their latest release ‘Petals’, a catchy-grungy handful of songs. Their performance is just as entertaining as their songs, a blend of energy and rock music thats not afraid to punch you in the face. Only on this occasion you’re grateful for it.
