The Stranglers My calendar was set for this 12 months ago even before the dates were announced. Like clockwork this is a annual night out that’s almost set in stone. And this time it’s a tad special. With a glint of ruby, this band are celebrating 40 years in the business. There can be few as resilient and as enduring, with a back catalogue to die for, than what these icons of the alternative possess. With a true stubbornness to call it quits, we’re here to see one of the UK's most enduring bands - The Stranglers.

Skunk Anansie Skunk Anansie hit the stage at 1000 mph and don't let up! Since 1994 they have melted faces and stomped crowds in to submission. Iconic front woman Skin may have gained some hair but has lost now of her aggression and charisma seemingly charming and scaring in equal measure. Between bouncing around the stage and crowd surfing the length of the Wulfrun she doesn't give up for a single second. Tonight they sound incredible and rip through a set containing songs old and new and its clear why they still have such rapid devoted fans.

Stereophonics The crowd seemed eager to see how the evenings set would unfold. With fan-reviews of the new album seemingly exhibiting “Marmite” - like love or hate reactions, the suspense wait was over as the opening bars of “We Share The Same Sun” rung through the venue. With a mere second or so breaths being taken, there was no real stopping the boys from well and truly launching into a double-whammy of fan favorites “Bartender and the Thief” and “A Thousand Trees”, cementing the notion that new material/artistic directions aside, Leeds were definitely in store for a Stereophonics show this evening.

The Travelling Band For one moment we shivered in anticipation of Spinal Tap schadenfreude as The Travelling Band stacked the stage with racks of back-up guitars and rock-tech paraphernalia - turns out they put it all to great effect. (My son tells me we saw this lot at Greenman Festival but I was distracted by the beckoning songs of the 8% scrumpy Sirens... rock n' roll!)

Lianne La Havas The Institute is fast becoming my favourite venue in the country’s second City. Not only is it a gloriously picturesque venue steeped in tradition and decadent grandeur of design, but it also has some blooming good acts on too – the most recent – Miss Lianne La Havas and her silky smooth vocal.

Clinic I’ve been a fan of Clinic for many years now, but have never seen them live. They’ve long been on my list of bands ‘to see’, but they don’t seem to do that many gigs. So I really jumped at the opportunity to pop up to Manchester’s Deaf Institute to catch one of a small number of UK concerts they’re playing before they head off on a North American tour.
