Trivium If you had survived the Valentine’s Day Anthrax gig here there is every chance you would have been returning to see Trivium tonight. One thing that Trivium are known for is being able to bring one hell of a support. In the past their tours have seen the likes of Children Of Bodom, In Flames and As I Lay Dying grace line ups. With that in mind fans are queuing up in their numbers even well before the 7pm doors to cast their eyes and ears over tonight's too.

Anthrax 30 years after the release of the seminal album ‘Among the Living’, the thrash metal pioneers from the Big Apple were back on tour and ready to induce days of post-concert neck-aches. Bullet For My Valentine 10 years has passed since Bullet For My Valentine hit the scene, headlining the Kerrang! Tour and it just so happened they are playing the very same venue again tonight. Alongside that they released their first full release 'The Poison', although tonight's show isn't about that there is definitely a sense of nostalgia with fans new and old in attendance.

Lush Tonight is a truly momentous occasion as Lush play their last ever gig. These legendary purveyors of ‘shoegaze’ originally split in 1996 after the sad death of drummer Chris Acland, but reformed last year to record an EP and play UK, European and US dates. However, with bassist Phil King’s recent decision to quit, the band have finally decided to call it a day. For tonight’s final gig, front-women Miki Berenyi and Emma Anderson and drummer (since the band reformed) Justin Welch are joined by Modern English bassist Michael Conroy.

Jesca Hoop I came late to the Hoop train, as mentioned in my earlier review of her tour with Sam Beam (of Iron and Wine fame). It’s no secret that I obsess over female singer songwriters - specifically those whose songs elicit feelings of sorrow and loss. Hoop’s earlier work varies in sound to my ears - unbeknownst to me, I’d heard ‘Born To’ many many times on BBC 6Music, without registering who she was, with it washing over me. But that song is heavily produced, with full band. And my preference is Hoop on her own with a guitar, stripped back and intimate.

Panic! At The Disco It feels odd referring to Panic! At The Disco as a “band” when in fact, technically it is now the solo project of front man Brendon Urie after original members parted ways a couple of years back. Not that you would know this from the music as Urie has stayed true to Panic’s happy but emo but edgy but a little bit racey style with new album Death Of A Bachelor.

PJ Harvey The force of nature that is PJ Harvey has not been one to do much touring of the provinces in recent years, but that has changed this year as she undertakes a UK tour centred around her last two albums, ‘Let England Shake’ (2011) and ‘The Hope Six Demolition Project’ (2016). These albums have been part of a great burst of activity from Ms Harvey, marking a more political stance, examining war, Britain’s history and wider global concerns. These are deeply personal albums, but then so are all of PJ Harvey’s records.

Wooden Shjips I’m always up for a good bit of psychedelia and tonight’s sold-out gig from space-drone-noise rocking San Franciscans Wooden Shjips has been long awaited. Band guitarist Ripley Johnson has recently done UK gigs with his ‘other band’, Moon Duo, but Wooden Shjips appearances here are rare, with the Gorilla gig part of a very short UK tour.

Michael Kiwanuka Right now there is a buzz around Michael Kiwanuka. A North Londoner in his late twenties he is promoting his second album released in the summer to critical acclaim. Twice nominated for the Mercury prize, life should be looking up for this accomplished guitarist and soulful singer-songwriter. Manchester Ritz, with a 1500 hundred capacity, is the final show of the UK leg. It is a sell-out and it is buzzing.

Angel Olsen After the release of her second full-length album Burn Your Fire For No Witness in 2014 I was hooked by Angel Olsen enchanting vocals and grunge-folk sound. Yet, until hearing Olsen live at Club Academy in Manchester, I hadn’t picked up on the resounding country-folk palette of her voice. Her music, especially the 2016 album MY WOMAN encompasses a wide range of genres, of grunge-rock to folk, with electronic reverb. It is an album which cannot and perhaps should not be pinned down. It reminds audiences not to constrain an artist to a certain genre whilst lyrically reminding us not to constrain a woman to certain social expectations.

Jesca Hoop and Sam Beam FORTUNATELY I was not disappointed by Beam & Hoop. I’d heard one track of theirs shared by a friend who loved both their solo careers, and I instantly bought the album. I’ve since listened to it incessantly, and LOVE their harmonies, but was largely unfamiliar with them as individuals or as solo artists. Part of me worried there would be an aloof hipster-esque snobbery to them and their performance – standoffish. Nothing could be further from the truth!
