Rita Ora In the five short years since last touring the UK Rita Ora is back with a bang on her comeback 'Girls' tour. Whilst many will remember her wit and charisma on tv as a mentor on both The Voice and X Factor, the hiatus from touring has shown how much the international superstar has to offer, from modelling and designing a colourful Adidas collection, philanthropy work and being cast as Mia Grey in the 50 Shades films. Manchester were in for a treat as this girl is on fire.

Trivium Summer has arrived unexpectedly early in Manchester, and around the campus of the university students are basking in the sunshine. Meanwhile, outside the Academy there's a sea of black clothing as the queue for tonight's metalfest begins to snake around the block. The Metal Hammer-sponsored 'The Sin And The Sentence' tour has brought a varied line-up to town that includes the new hopes for Death Metal, Venom Prison, Texan thrashers Power Trip, Grammy-nominated hardcore bruisers Code Orange and headliners Trivium for a night of big riffs and plenty of energy. Almost at the end of a nearly 7-week European run, expectations for tonight's show are bound to be high.

Evanescence Six years after their last UK tour, Evanescence have returned with their newly released album Synthesis which features a combination of brand new material and some of their older classics (with a twist). Tonight the Manchester Apollo is buzzing with an unexpected and different vibe to your average 'rock' concert. The audience has matured somewhat, gone are the days of baggy jeans and chains, thrashing about a sweaty mosh pit, as tonight, people have traded that in for formal attire, ready for this seated only show.

Editors Editors, a band that could easily sell out some of Manchester’s bigger venues such as The Apollo and The Academy yet here I find myself in a queue from Indie kids to Grandmas and Grandads wrapped around The Cathedral in the pouring rain on the second night of their three-date album launch tour.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Tonight is a real labour of love for me seeing my favourite ‘new’ band of the past two years, Aussie psych polymaths, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Let’s just call them KGATLW. Their main claim to fame in 2017 seems to have been achieving the goal of releasing five albums in one year. No mean feat, especially considering that they managed to maintain the musical quality control throughout. However, it also probably meant that none of their albums got in the spotlight in the usual end-of-year ‘best albums’ charts. The band has a very busy world touring schedule and live they are a real phenomenon. Tonight the sold-out Academy is heaving with bodies as fans come to see KGATLW on this year’s rather short UK tour.

Brian Fallon & The Howling Weather Brian Fallon walks on stage full of smiles with his band The Howling Weather, which features the familiar face of Ian Perkins, and they quickly burst into ‘A Wonderful Life’. After the song someone within the crowd responds by shouting “where is the checked shirt Brian” to which he responds with how he brought the polka dot shirt out especially for Manchester, one of the many exclusive treats he has up his sleeve for us. Next up on the setlist is the catchy ‘Rosemary’ and one of the brand new songs ‘Forget Me Not’ which goes down a treat.

Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer A guitarist; drummer and bassist take the stage and do a short warm up to herald the entrance of Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer. The two are sisters, raised in rural Alabama, bound and sometimes separated by a deeply tragic event witnessed during their teenage years. Both went on to individual and critically acclaimed recording careers but, now as ‘forty-somethings’, they have just recorded their first album together. Tonight they play all ten songs from Not Dark Yet in virtual track-list order.
