James Halifax, a town famous for Cat’s Eyes (the reflecting studs on the road that keep you safe), chocolate and banking has a rich musical history, but of late the calibre of acts playing here has had a bit of a boom with the Stone Roses, Kasabian and Florence + the Machine having all played at the Victoria Theatre recently. Tonight it was the turn of Mancunian legends James to bring their unique show to the beautiful venue tonight.

Jess Glynne Jess Glynne; 'Wow I didn't know she was a thing anymore' this was what my friend said to me after learning I was off to see her this evening. Well unless you've been under a rock the last couple of months she's back. Personally I would argue that she'd never gone anywhere, taking the de facto time off after her first album and record breaking six number ones (first for a British female solo artist) before releasing her upcoming second album. So far this year though she co-wrote Sigala and Paloma Faith's 'Lullaby', featured in Rudimental's 'These Days' (hitting UK number one) and Yungen's 'Mind On It', as well as releasing her own single 'I'll be there'. But it's been a while since we've seen her live, the first since she can remember and to paraphrase it's like 'starting anew'.

Rita Ora In the five short years since last touring the UK Rita Ora is back with a bang on her comeback 'Girls' tour. Whilst many will remember her wit and charisma on tv as a mentor on both The Voice and X Factor, the hiatus from touring has shown how much the international superstar has to offer, from modelling and designing a colourful Adidas collection, philanthropy work and being cast as Mia Grey in the 50 Shades films. Manchester were in for a treat as this girl is on fire.

Wolfgang Flür There’s a good turnout at the Brudenell tonight to see a rare UK live show from ex-Kraftwork member Wolfgang Flür. Flür appeared as electronic percussionist on all Kraftwerk’s classic albums from 1974’s ‘Autobahn’ to 1986’s ‘Electric Cafe’. The audience at the Brudenell is a really unusual mix, ranging from long-in-the-tooth Kraftwerk fans to young enthusiasts of everything techno and electronica.

Ray LaMontagne Hats off to Ray LaMontagne - He’s ‘Just Passing Through’ but calls in at Sheffield City Hall for an incredible intimate acoustic session. He is an elusive beast this Ray Lamontagne, quick to hide and squirrel away back in his US home, never venturing too far away and therefore in the last 14 years I’ve not managed to catch a live performance ever, in fact he hasn’t even been on these shores for 7 years, despite releasing some stunning albums over that period.

Frank Turner In a packed out Camden Roundhouse, just under 2,000 fans eagerly anticipated the grand entry of the greatest showman that is Frank Turner. And his entry is certainly epic as his band mate trips him over whilst running onto the stage, falling flat on his face. An extremely embarrassed Frank Turner curses and laughs at guitarist Ben Lloyd as he continues to start the show with the energetic and upbeat ‘1933’.

The Bluetones The Bluetones are one of those bands that seem to have been around forever. I remember first seeing them in the 90’s and I have had sporadic dalliances with them ever since. Tonight I am not alone in my admiration for this group of west of London musicians as the Plug in Sheffield is full and bouncing.

Nap Eyes There is a short change over time before Nap Eyes take to the stage. I was fortunate enough to catch the Nova Scotian quartet at last year’s Moseley Folk Festival which led me to seek them out on their return to King's Heath. They open up the set with Judgement taken from the latest album, I’m Bad Now, with their usual laid back ease and understated approach to music making.

Jungle There was a large crowd out in Nottingham on Tuesday to enjoy the musical prowess of Jungle a collective of musicians that captivated the ears of British summer barbeques and festivals just over four years ago. The night started with a queue bending around the Rock City venue.

The Vamps May the fourth be with all the people attending The Vamps today at the Genting Arena Birmingham. As I take to my seat the Yorkshire lads PM take to the stage with lead singer Dan Reynard jumping and singing and making his presence known; within minutes of being on stage he had the crowd dancing along with him.

Manic Street Preachers The first time I saw the Manic Street Preachers was at the Adelphi in Hull back in 1991, at the time they raced through their soon to be released debut double album in 70mph post punk fashion, the sound was abysmal but that didn’t matter as they were the band of their time, fashionably brash and didn’t give a damn about what they said, or who they said it to.
