King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Tonight is a real labour of love for me seeing my favourite ‘new’ band of the past two years, Aussie psych polymaths, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Let’s just call them KGATLW. Their main claim to fame in 2017 seems to have been achieving the goal of releasing five albums in one year. No mean feat, especially considering that they managed to maintain the musical quality control throughout. However, it also probably meant that none of their albums got in the spotlight in the usual end-of-year ‘best albums’ charts. The band has a very busy world touring schedule and live they are a real phenomenon. Tonight the sold-out Academy is heaving with bodies as fans come to see KGATLW on this year’s rather short UK tour.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Earlier this year Stu Mackenzie of King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard announced that the band would be releasing as many as five new albums this year. At the time this may have seemed a rash hostage-to-fortune statement, but it’s now August and their third album of 2017 has just appeared. So they may still be on-target for five. How can they make all these albums in a year? Well, beside the fact that KGATLW are very industrious in terms of work ethic, the answer may be that, as they obviously don’t want to get typecast in terms of genre and style, they work through all sorts of experimental ideas and collaborations and quickly move on. In the future any attempt to do a KGATLW ‘best of’ selection is going to be a very tricky job, given the sheer breath of styles the band have taken in.

King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard Scala was sweaty even before King Gizzard & The Lizard Wizard came onstage. In typical London fashion, everybody was complaining about the tube strike and the fact it is far too hot in the capital. Thankfully, the sold-out room shut up as soon as King Gizzard jumped onstage, a snug fit for the seven-piece.
