Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer A guitarist; drummer and bassist take the stage and do a short warm up to herald the entrance of Shelby Lynne and Allison Moorer. The two are sisters, raised in rural Alabama, bound and sometimes separated by a deeply tragic event witnessed during their teenage years. Both went on to individual and critically acclaimed recording careers but, now as ‘forty-somethings’, they have just recorded their first album together. Tonight they play all ten songs from Not Dark Yet in virtual track-list order.

Möngöl Hörde A strange ringing motif fills the space as hundreds of metal heads prepare for the war, conducted by Frank Turner and his musical alter-ego Möngöl Hörde. There was a universal switch in everyones head as we all knew we would be saying ‘Hey Judas’ and causing mayhem to the song of the same name. Before I could inhale in preparation for the strong embrace of a full bearded man rugby tackling me, I found myself on the ground in a state of shock for the energy that has just been orchestrated by Frank Turner. As I stagger to my feet I am confronted by the man himself as he crowd surfs right in front of me and is screaming in my face. At this point I have no choice but to familiarised myself with this wild beast I see in front of me.

Wand A week ago I hadn’t heard of Wand. Then they were in session on Marc Riley’s Radio 6 programme. I was impressed and then, checking them out, I found they were appearing at the Brudenell a matter of days later as part of a short UK tour. So then it was frantic efforts to get along to Leeds.

The Weather Station “In order to successfully put on a performance you have to take up space in a room and you have to allow it to be a situation where people are listening to you and you have to be comfortable with that and you have to feel like you have something to say”. So said Tamara Lindeman aka The Weather Station in her documentary short ‘Sentiment & Memory’. Despite suffering from a cold and the inevitable angst associated with the first night of a headlining UK tour she, to use her words, “made it” at the Leeds Brudenell.

Black Veil Brides The opening night of the ABvBA UK run of shows got off to a fine start in Birmingham, although not without some ‘first night’ glitches it has to be said. The co-headline ‘Resurrection’ tour bringing ‘modern metal’ heavyweights Asking Alexandria and Black Veil Brides together was something that a lot of people obviously wanted to see, evidenced by the sheer amount of people queuing to get in to the venue – the line of excited faces reaching back as far from the Birmingham Academy as you could see.

A Tribute to Dave ‘Swarb’ Swarbrick Dave Swarbrick was an iconic figure in the folk music scene, probably most famous for being fiddler, singer and composer with folk-rock pioneers Fairport Convention and for his collaborations with English folk-revival legend Martin Carthy. Gig Junkies reviewed their concert at Settle’s Victoria Hall in 2015, on what turned out to be their final tour together. Alas Dave passed-away in 2016 leaving instructions that there should be no funeral. However, before he died he did talk about one last celebratory bash with his friends. Now some of those musical friends and collaborators have got together to organise a touring tribute to the man and his music – ‘Swarb! Suits Him Well’. Hebden Bridge is the first date of the tour and The Trades Club is sold-out.
