Less Than Jake Tonight's gig was a real treat for ska punk fans, featuring two of the genre's biggest names as double headliners, with support from two more well established bands. Despite the early start time, Nottingham's famous Rock City was packed to the rafters and the energy was palpable from the very beginning.

Hell Is For Heroes It's hard to believe that 15 years have passed since Hell Is For Heroes released their first studio album, The Neon Handshake. It was one of the defining albums of the early-2000s rock scene, gathering rave reviews and scoring Rock Sound's Album of the Year award.

The Pigeon Detectives On Friday, I postponed binge-watching Stranger Things 2 to go and review The Pigeon Detectives at Birmingham’s O2 Institute, supported by Little Comets and The Clause. But was it worth it? The initial melodrama involving a member of security staff asking me my age, and then reacting with embarrassment when I told her, was not a good start (I am more than double the 14+ age requirement for this gig). However, things seemed a bit more reasonable once I got inside.

NME Awards Tour 2016: Bloc Party The final night of the NME Awards Tour 2016 brings the unlikely combination of Bloc Party, Drenge, Rat Boy and Bugzy Malone to Birmingham’s O2 Academy. Up first is Bugzy Malone, playing to an audience that is still in its lag phase of growth and which gives a dismal response to the ubiquitous command of “Make some noise.” Unfortunately for Bugzy Malone, Birmingham’s NME fans are not his target audience.

Maxïmo Park

Maxïmo Park celebrate their 10-year existence with a sold-out performance within the faux Grecian décor of Birmingham’s O2 Institute. Support comes from Stealing Sheep, who appear on stage through smoke and UFO-like lighting, clad in black & neon capes and matching sunglasses, to sounds reminiscent of the X-Files theme tune.

The Bluetones What better way to indulge in a bit of 90s nostalgia than an evening with Cockney Britpop superstars, The Bluetones? They’ve pulled an impressive crowd for their 20th anniversary reunion tour (or ‘cash-in’ as frontman Mark Morriss quips), packing out the Birmingham Academy, despite their 4 year hiatus.

Maxïmo Park Having dipped in and out of Maxïmo Park's career over the last ten years and having already seen several unbeatable live performances, I was excited to see how they'd evolved since the last time I caught them back in 2010. The Institute is the perfect setting for their typically decadent offering and the room fills up quickly despite the early Friday night start time.

Me First and the Gimme Gimmes Tonight's gig at the Birmingham Academy had a varied lineup, and it was unclear whether this would be a good or bad thing. All three bands had punk leanings, but each pushed at the boundaries of the genre in different ways. It promised to be an intriguing night - would we be treated to an interesting mix of musical styles, or would the bands be too different to keep the crowd happy?
