Heaven 17 Heaven 17 never toured when The Luxury Gap album first came out even with it being their most successful album. It contains masterpieces such as Come Live With Me, Let Me Go, We Live So Fast and of course their most well-known track, Temptation. To hear it played live is an experience that should be on everyone’s bucket list. This is a phenomenal show and Glenn and Martyn know how to throw a party. The London leg of the tour was hosted at Shepherd’s Bush Empire – a favourite venue of the band. The tour is currently over halfway through and yet on this cold November night, London came out in droves, queuing up to see these 80’s legends. The audience were rewarded by Heaven 17 telling them that they were the best audience – apparently even better than Liverpool. The audience lapped it up.

Heaven 17 So on this Valentine’s eve, storms are plummeting the UK but in Brum the weather isn't too bad, although traffic out of town doesn’t look the best. But that's okay cos we’ve been tempted -  we're in town and we all be snug and cosy in Birmingham’s Town Hall for an evening of romance, Heaven 17 style.

Heaven 17 Two years after their last major tour which saw them revisiting their debut album Penthouse and Pavement Heaven 17 are back on the road showcasing its follow up, The Luxury Gap. Developing the sound they’d pioneered on their first release The Luxury Gap added an even more sophisticated soul sheen to the mix with impressive results. The band’s biggest selling album shifted over 300,000 copies in its first year of release and spawned the ruddy massive hit single Temptation. Of course they famously neglected to play that, or indeed any other of the tracks from the album live back in the day so, as with the Penthouse and Pavement tour, this is one of the first times that most of the audience will have heard them ‘au naturel’.

Heaven 17 Almost every band under the sun is doing this ‘let’s play one of our best albums in one night’ things now, but Heaven 17 have more reason than most to revisit their crowning glory. Why? Well, back when they originally released it (1981) they didn’t play live... partly it seemed to have been down to a refusal to do what was expected and partly down to the fact that the cutting edge technology of the day was less reliable than a cheque from the Irish government. Now most mobile phones would be up to the job so, thirty years late, here’s Penthouse and Pavement in all its vintage synth funk glory. Of course 1981 was a completely different time to the world we’re all living in today. There was a recession on, loads of political unrest, a vicious Tory government, religious extremism, rising unemployment, deeply unpopular wars and all we had to look forward to was a royal wedding. How times change eh? Hmmmm.

Heaven 17 After a critically acclaimed 6 Music gig with super fans La Roux earlier this year Heaven 17 bring their classic album Penthouse and Pavement to Birmingham’s HMV Institute on Friday 26th November. Justifiably featured in the book ‘1001 Albums You Must Hear Before You Die’ it spawned a penthouse full of classic synth n’funk tracks including ‘(We Don’t Need This) Fascist Groove Thang’, ‘The Height Of The Fighting’ and (still a dance floor filler today by all accounts) ‘Play To Win’.
