The Black Keys In a situation resembling that of the Amy Macdonald gig a week earlier, where I knew absolutely nothing about the artist, I had a similar dilemma with The Black Keys. This time however it was at the other end of the spectrum - I'd seen the duo from Akron Ohio, more times than you can shake a stick at! Reason being.... I love em! The fact that they are a two piece with so much more raw power than most four and five piece bands have, gets me every time. Dan with his growling vocal - akin to a young Paul Rogers together with his snarling guitar lines, ably complimented by Pat on the marauding drums is right up my strata. I make no bones about it. I love, love, love em. Consequently it's pretty hard to give a balanced, entirely objective view. By the powers vested in me as a professional journo however, by golly I'd try!

Grace and Danger: The Songs of John Martyn Part of the English Originals Weekend tonight saw a veritable cornucopia (yep, I’ve been reading the dictionary again) of artists pay their own tribute to a man who, in my humble opinion, is hugely underappreciated. Of course John did himself no real favours during his 40 odd year career... what with all the drink and drugs... and more drink... and... oh go on... just a few more drugs. Having his leg lopped off in 2006 probably didn’t help matters either, but the overwhelming feeling that you got after he passed away last year was that John well and truly lived life to the full. Inevitably if you’re going to do that you can expect massive highs and crashing lows and listening to John’s songs it’s clear that’s just what he got. Anger, love, hate, bitterness, regret, joy... he covered pretty much every emotion under the sun and tonight’s gig gave us a chance to see how others manage to interpret what are, often, intensely personal songs.

Bad Company On approaching the LG Arena (NEC as it was formerly known) I couldn't work out whether it was the adverse weather conditions or the general age of the audience that was accounting for the copious amount of wrinkles at the Bad Company gig on Thursday night... ...On closer inspection, and much like the Fleetwood Mac gig that GJ covered last year, it was the average age of the blues bands fan base which accounted for the odd crows foot or two, not surprising when you consider that the band - the brain child of former Free front man Paul Rodgers, started plying their trade in the year I was born (1973 in case you didn't know) and had many of their hits throughout the 70s.

Jamie T A number of things very quickly become apparent at a Jamie T gig. Firstly, he's got a loyal, passionate urban youth following, all of whom seem to know every word to every song. rust me that's a lot of lyrics. Led by their onstage conductor, they sing along with gay abandon, and shout, whoop and holler at all of the key points. LLOOOONNNDDDOOOONNN!!
