Blink-182 It was summer 2001 and the sun shone down on the Spanish isle of Lanzarote, the cool young lad with his baggy shorts and trucker cap lent me his headphones and thus began the journey of enlightenment that is Blink-182. The holiday romance fizzled out but the love of the punk-rock cheeky ditties did not and here we are sixteen years later, older, wiser and at Birmingham’s Barclaycard Arena.

Emily Barker Stepping into Union Chapel on a Winter’s night, it seems more likely that this audience is attending a carol service rather than a gig; the polite chatter amongst the crowd, as they sit on cold pews, staring in awe at the stunning stained glass and huge space- the space in which Emily Barker and her Red Clay Halo step onto, one by one, every movement seen and heard by the sold out crowd. Starting with ‘Nostalgia’, the lyrics “twelve thousand miles away from your smile” seem somewhat inappropriate in this chapel, in which the spirituality and classicism are connective and magnetic.

Frank Turner It’s been a couple of months now since I last spent an evening enjoying the company of Mr Frank Turner and it’s fair to say he’s obviously gone up in the world since his autumn 2009 tour. Back in 2009 I went to see him in Wolverhampton with a couple of songs in my head and a budding interest in the self proclaimed ‘Skinny, half-arsed English country singer’ and his unique brand of folk/punk. Since that show, I’ve become a bona-fide Frank Turner fan, and Sunday’s gig in the more prominent venue of Birmingham’s O2 Academy 1, was absolutely phenomenal!

Frank Turner A large crowd of sweaty, friendly, enthusiastic fans were there to greet him and his 2 supports of the night. The first, a comedy-musician going by the name of ‘Beans on Toast’ warmed the crowd up nicely with a fantastic blend of gritty, down to earth comedy and some truly melodic songs, a lot of which echoed the semi-anarchic folk-punk we were all waiting to hear from Frank.

The Gaslight Anthem Polar Bear Club are on first, a fun hardcore-ish band in the 90's sense of the word whose songs largely run into one another. In defence, it's terribly early: 7pm starts are no one's friend. There is some weakness in the vocals but the guitars are strong and clever and there's a lot of energy thrown about on what is an otherwise spectacularly crappy day in the Midlands. They play a new track, Take Me To The Town, which intros like an eighties musical montage colliding with 90s rock. In the good way.
