Carnifex It's a fiercely cold night in Birmingham and snow is falling outside Mama Roux's as an almost sold-out crowd stays warm inside for something far more brutal in the shape of deathcore royalty with Aversions Crown, Oceano and headliners, Carnifex.

Jake Bugg Over the years we have been spoiled by the talent that has come from Nottingham. From the legendary Bruce Dickinson to the legendary drummer, Ian Paice. But if you happened to find yourself at the London Palladium on the 26th of February this year, you would have been treated to a very different style of musical talent to have emerged from the English midlands. The incredibly talented Jake Bugg graced the London theatre tonight to spread his eclectic mix of Americana Indie rock.

The Front Bottoms The Front Bottoms take the stage in a misty orange glow surrounded by wafts of incense. Opening with ‘You used to say (Holy Fuck)’ – the opener from last year’s ‘Going Grey’, this slow build see the crowd swearing at the top of their lungs. As ‘Going Grey’ is the current album they’re touring its extended cover acts as the backdrop; presenting the crowd with a giant penis just behind front man Brian Sella’s shoulder.

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard Tonight is a real labour of love for me seeing my favourite ‘new’ band of the past two years, Aussie psych polymaths, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard. Let’s just call them KGATLW. Their main claim to fame in 2017 seems to have been achieving the goal of releasing five albums in one year. No mean feat, especially considering that they managed to maintain the musical quality control throughout. However, it also probably meant that none of their albums got in the spotlight in the usual end-of-year ‘best albums’ charts. The band has a very busy world touring schedule and live they are a real phenomenon. Tonight the sold-out Academy is heaving with bodies as fans come to see KGATLW on this year’s rather short UK tour.

Brian Fallon & The Howling Weather Brian Fallon walks on stage full of smiles with his band The Howling Weather, which features the familiar face of Ian Perkins, and they quickly burst into ‘A Wonderful Life’. After the song someone within the crowd responds by shouting “where is the checked shirt Brian” to which he responds with how he brought the polka dot shirt out especially for Manchester, one of the many exclusive treats he has up his sleeve for us. Next up on the setlist is the catchy ‘Rosemary’ and one of the brand new songs ‘Forget Me Not’ which goes down a treat.

The Lovely Eggs Tonight The Lovely Eggs play the first gig of their tour to promote the new album, ‘This is Eggland’. It’s all rather special as the venue is ‘The Yorkshire House’, a gig-loving pub in the band’s hometown of Lancaster. The Yorkshire House is a small venue and the tickets quickly sold-out when they went on sale, so we are expecting a classic hot sweaty evening of gyrating bodies and uplifting loud music.
