The Amazons It was the glorious surround of the avant garde Mama Roux’s in Digbeth that greeted the newest kids on the block, The Amazons to Brummyland on Tuesday night.

The Amazons Interview We do this stuff at GJ.HQ because we LOVE music. It makes it so much nicer when you’re interviewing somebody who you have an instant affinity with. That was there in droves when I spoke to Matt Thompson, the lead singer of the band that everyone is talking about, The Amazons. A genuinely nice guy. Enjoying a well earned ‘sloth day’ and sporting only boxers and tee (thankfully it was a telephone interview) we chatted about all things music, marketing and mayhem!

Jack Garratt Not untypically, it was a dreary November evening in Brummieland as we ventured out to see Jack Garratt, with rain spitting down like flem dribbling from a Giant with a lisp. What wasn't at all typical was the sweltering 13 degrees that accompanied the rain. Anything to do with the 'Super Moon' per chance?

BAND NAME So, Gig Junkies make their now annual pilgrimage to Dublin to take in some splendid live music. Last year it was Sir Noel of Gallagher, this time round it was for more rock royalty in the guise of a certain Miles Kane and Alex Turner and their Last Shadow Puppets performing the last of 3 sold out gigs at one of Dublin’s original and most prestigious venues.

Brian Wilson It was the majestic surround of Birmingham’s Symphony Hall and the pure majesty of a certain Mr Brian Wilson of Beach Boys fame celebrating the 50 year anniversary of ground breaking album Pet Sounds that awaited us last night and to say there was a palpable excitement by all inside the impressive arena - many of whom were clad in Hawaiian Shirts and floral Leis in honour of the great man.

Wolfmother Wolfmother made their way onto the stage at the rather early time of 8 bells to make sure they finished in time for another modern phenomena, the 10pm curfew. Not that it mattered a jot as the now packed out Rock City greeted the band noisily and enthusiastically.

Fun Lovin' Criminals Minus the element for the less than legal shenanigans, there aren’t many more fitting and descriptive band names than that of the Fun Lovin' Criminals. It’s been nigh on 20 years since I first witnessed Huey and the boys in all of their resplendent glory and now they were back in Brummyland, to treat the congregation to a complete play through of their inaugural album ‘Come Find Yourself’; a record that spent over 12 months in the charts and one that sold over 10 million copies. Boom!

Hozier Well now good people, please add Hozier - the cheeky chappy who hails from County Wicklow Ireland to the list of ‘one named wonders’ to have their name scribed on to the Gig Junkies hall of fame.

The Darkness

I have to confess. A Friday night with The Darkness is not on my ‘bucket list’ and after a long week at work I wasn’t overly excited at the prospect. For me it was going to be a whole load of ‘cock rock’ clichés and not the most enjoyable of evenings…

Little did I know however that I was about to witness the finest performance of frontmanship (if there is such a word) from Freddie Mercury reincarnate, Mr Justin Hawkins performing with his cohorts from Lowestoft, Suffolk, The Darkness!

Lianne La Havas The stunning Lianne La Havas made her way to the stage donning a beautiful full length dress and trademark scooped up hair-do. Always elegant, always beautiful, tonight was much the same. The only difference tonight was her opening guitar of choice, as she was wielding a bass guitar – something I’d not seen her do before. Not that it mattered a jot, seemingly at home plucking 4 slightly thicker strings than the 6 of her more traditional guitar.

Circa Waves Last time Gig Junkies caught up with modern day Mersey Beaters Circa Waves it was down on the glorious Cornwall Coast basking in the sun at Boardmasters Festival. Their upbeat indie pop sound coming across perfectly in the summer sun to the backdrop of the Ocean waves. I was therefore interested to see how their upbeat act transcended on a dark chilly Friday night at Birmingham’s Institute.

Leon Bridges Having seen a certain Mr Leon Bridges once before in the tiny room at Birmingham’s Institute, the team at Gig Junkies were particularly excited for their jaunt ‘ooop North’ to Manchester’s Albert Hall to see the hottest prospect hailing from Atlanta Georgia since Kanye West.

Boardmasters There’s something about a festival which evokes a certain amount of excitement, anticipation and a sense of ‘what the chuff is going to happen over the next few days?’ Boardmasters – set against the picturesque backdrop of the English Channel on the hills of Cornwall’s Watergate Bay – did exactly that, but did so in a delightful hilltop setting.

Paloma Faith It was the glorious surround of Cannock Chase that greeted us on a warm summer's Friday evening to enjoy the musical stylings of Paloma Faith and Liam Bailey. Forest live takes part in a modern day amphitheatre - minus the slaying of Christians, where as one woman correctly pointed out in broad Black Country accent, “the queue for the coffee is bigger than the beer queue”. It was that kind of gig, very refined. You know the sort, the one where people throw toilet rolls instead of pints of warm beer.
