Larkin Poe Okay, quick quiz for you...how many famous ‘Poes’ can you name? Go on...if you’re lucky you might just come up with the one, the granddaddy of horror himself Mr Edgar Allen Poe. Even so I was more than mildly surprised to discover that tonight’s band, Larkin Poe (sisters Rebecca and Megan) are actually related (albeit distantly) to the dude behind The Raven, The Tell Tale Heart and The Fall of the House of Usher (serves him right for releasing rubbish records...). Cool eh? Formerly trading as The Lovell Sisters (that’s the sister’s surname, Larkin Poe was their great, great, great grandfather and cousin of Edgar), Larkin Poe have been around since 2010 and tonight they’re fresh from Glastonbury...well as fresh as you can be after spending several days ankle deep in mud and...er...other ‘stuff’...I guess.

Moseley Folk Festival 2013 Oh lordy, the OAPs are right you know. The older you get the faster the years fly by. It seems like only yesterday that we were singing along lustily to All Around My Hat (the degree of lustiness being in direct proportion to the quantity of cider consumed) and yet here we are again at another MoFo. I’m not complaining, it’s the bit between festivals that gets my goat... real life I think it’s called. Jolly silly idea.

Patrick Duff Free gigs, open to all comers, are always tricky blighters. Inevitably if it’s being held in a bar you’re going to end up with some people who are just there for a drink, in fact they probably haven’t got the faintest idea who’s playing, perhaps they’re even unaware that there’s a gig going on. This was, in part, the story of tonight’s gig. A remarkable night from an equally remarkable artist.

Sharon Van Etten Sharon Van Etten hails from New York and has been a respected, but little known, figure on the music scene since her debut album was released in 2009. However, the release of her acclaimed third album, “Tramp”, has really brought her to the attention of a much wider audience and she has received rave reviews and has been championed on various radio programmes. One of her songs has even covered by Justin Vernon of Bon Iver and Aaron Dessner of The National. So it is great to see her in Birmingham at one of her limited number of UK dates.
