Future Islands "Woah buddy! I'll take all of that you've got!". Those were a grinning David Letterman's words after Future Islands' performance of Seasons (Waiting For You) on his show last March, a performance that was soon to go viral. It was one of those videos you kept going back to, without quite knowing why - but something undefinable kept drawing you back to watch that most watchable of frontmen, Samuel T Herring.

Kodaline If you’ve been watching prime time television over the past couple of months you’ll have heard of Kodaline, perhaps even without realising it. The advert for debut album ‘In a Perfect World’ has been pretty much everywhere. And if you have seen it you’ve most likely enjoyed what you’ve heard. Kodaline’s sound sits somewhere between the rousing ballads of Coldplay and the upbeat folk of Mumford and Sons which puts them squarely in the ‘bound to be popular’ category. That broad appeal combined with good word-of-mouth reviews from previous shows explains the sold-out crowd in Manchester on a Sunday night.

Band of Horses "Manchester! I don't give a shit it's Monday, I force you to party with us!" was not the opening line I was expecting to hear from American group Band of Horses as they walked in to greet an excited Mancunian crowd. But it was certainly an apt introduction for the animated and rocking set which promptly followed. These guys put on quite the show.

The Charlatans As Tim Burgess looked out at the bouncing crowd filling the Apollo from underneath his dyed peroxide blonde fringe and launched into the opening lyric from ‘North Country Boy’ with steely force and confidence, I knew that this was going to be one of those gigs. Playing their 1997 hit album Tellin’ Stories in its entirety, The Charlatans brought the house down on Friday, leaving their audience for the most part in a state of shock and awe.

Miike Snow When the start of a gig looks like a cross between a spaceship from E.T. and some kind of tribal ritual you think you must be in for an interesting evening. You can guarantee that you are if it is hosted by Swedish indie dance pop outfit Miike Snow. Supported by Niki And The Dove and Alex Metric, the group brought their constantly and pleasantly surprising and uplifting set to the Ritz in Manchester this week.

Slam Dunk Festival North It’s not that often you get lost in a university students union. How many of them are big enough that you end up walking in circle passing by the supermarket and terrace bar on several occasions before you realise you’ve wandered past the room you wanted twice? Well Leeds University Student Union is one such place you can do that which was why it turned out to be an excellent host for the Slam Dunk Festival North on Saturday.

Foster The People I first heard Foster The People’s 'Pumped Up Kicks' while driving around San Francisco about a month and a half ago (I know I was very late to the party) and at the time it resonated enough for me to think ‘I bet they’d be quite good live’. Seeing them perform their album Torches at the first show of their current two week tour across Europe, I can safely say that was an understatement.
