Rex Orange County Two years ago I saw the incredibly talented Rex Orange County at the Peckham Liberal Club for the release of first studio album, Apricot Princess. The venue held just over a hundred people and the tickets only cost a tenner. When he walked onto the stage he gave a hint of a smile but it seemed there was a slight sense of nervousness to his being. After a few songs, he settled in when he realised that most of the people in his line of sight were friends from school and he played a very cool and calm show for us all.

Lissie At an old cinema in Dalston, London, hundreds of music lovers descend through the horrid rain on a Monday to bare witness to one of music’s purest voices. The spectacular Lissie headlines EartH, one of the greatest venues in London. Only on this occasion, the strings wouldn’t be cutting through her fingers. Instead the keys would be pressed by another’s hands as we see the beautiful contrast and translation as we hear her most familiar songs in a retrospective tour, translated on piano.

King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard Thunderous drums fill a HUGE room in North London to a sold out crowd. The sound is extra fat and dirty coming from not one, but two powerhouse drummers. Low, ball destroying guitars erupt to tease spectators. A little break. And a whirlwind of chaos sends everyone into one of the biggest mosh pit I’ve ever seen at London’s Alexandra Palace. There is no mercy. There are no points for second place. You either give it your all, or leave. THAT, my friends, is the effect of Australia’s finest band at the moment. I am, of course, talking about King Gizzard & the Lizard Wizard.

The Who The greatest bands and musicians are slowly fading away and, being 20 years old, I’ll never be able to say I’ve seen many of the legendary rock bands to have ever lived because they’re either too old or dead by now. But after a trip to Wembley stadium one Saturday night in July, all of that changed with two legendary acts of the rock world taking over the stage.

Backstreet Boys What has the world come to? It’s been making me so distraught! What the hell has happened to boybands??? They’re all in mismatched clothes; they move about the stage with no purpose; and sometimes even have the audacity to play live instruments. That’s not what I want. I want matching outfits, synchronised dancing, over the top harmonies and cheddar cheesy key changes! It’s a good job that the world’s number one selling boyband stopped by England’s capital for a couple of shows. Back to basics and back in town. BACKSTREET IS OFFICIALLY BACK, LADIES AND GENTLEMEN.

All Points East On a slightly rainy day in London, the only glimmer of fresh summer vibes came from Victoria Park and All Points East as the first weekend came to a close. But before that time could come, a whole collection of sounds bursted out of the five stages with plenty of exciting artists displaying their work to the masses.

Mettavolution by Rodrigo Y Gabriela With the vast majority of today’s popular music heavily relying on catchy vocal hooks to draw in the attention of listeners, you don’t often find music that can captivate listeners simply with instruments. So we take away the vocals and the drums usually give the songs rhythm. But if you take that away you’re simply left with almost empty sounding guitars. Well not with the latest musical endeavours from the mighty Rodrigo y Gabriela. That’s right. They’re back with immense Mexican vibes in the form of Mettavolution.

Rodrigo y Gabriela It’s an experience like no other as a wave of Mexican classical guitar fills the room to create a mass cheer from a pretty much sold out Roundhouse. The grooves coming from the immensely talented Rodrigo y Gabriela fill everyone with joy as every eye is fixed on them.

Young Fathers As 2018 draws to a close, I usually create a list of the best gigs, albums and songs of the year. This was one of the toughest decisions to make, but a night at Brixton with Young Fathers made that decision a whole lot easier.

Crossfaith On the 19th October 2018, a wild spark invaded Camden’s Electric Ballroom from the deepest depths of Japan. When I say a wild spark, I mean a combination of electrifying metal and dirty dubstep that fuelled a packed out basement venue in one of the most quirky parts of London. These unmistakable sounds come from the 5 piece Electronicore band Crossfaith, who’ve been causing havoc to music fans since 2006.

Jorja Smith Ok. I’m going to start off with a cheesy cliche just to get it over with. Jorja Smith has the voice of an angel. Right. Now we’ve got that over and done with, I’ll continue.

The Bronx A mere 30 yards away from Camden Town tube station, you come across a strange set of double doors they look like they lead to the ground floor of a block of offices. Only this time, the stairs lead you further down to the depths of one of London's most popular venues. I am in fact talking about the Electric Ballroom. Many incredible artists have played here such as Muse, Beck and George Ezra. But if you were to be present on the 10th June 2018, you would have been witness to large mosh pits and the screams of one Matt Caughthran. All of this, curtesy of The Bronx. A pure punk rock band from Los Angeles, California.

APE Presents Victoria Park is a place that the locals of the area visit for lovely runs, dog walks and picnic dates. It’s a truly tranquil and enjoyable place that people come to relax. So it would have been a bit of a shock for those on their daily dog walk to see their path cut short by the large installation that is All Points East. In the festival’s first year running, the opening weekend went down a storm. Today, Victoria park was jam packed full of festival goers ready to see the incredibly popular Catfish and the Bottlemen.
