Nothing More Kinda breezy as we make our way to the 02 Academy tonight to be entertained by ‘one of the nicest men’ in the music biz. He’s on his ‘own’ tonight having ‘left’ his band compatriots to go on a journey of his own. He’s still very much a part of Elbow, but tonight Guy Garvey is out with his own offering ‘Courting the Squall.’

Impericon Never Say Die! Tour Impericon Never Say Die! Tour landed in the UK, kick-starting in Birmingham! Brutal metal band Emmure headlined, with co-headliners, just as brutal metalcore band, Miss May I. Alongside them were performances from Hand of Mercy, Northlane, Hundredth, Betraying the Martyrs, I Killed the Prom Queen and Carnifex. O2 packed out full extreme bruising metal heads for a night of rampage and headaches and they weren’t disappointed. Exploding performances and heart pounding drops shook the floor! Was a night not to be missed.

Noah and the Whale First shooting to fame in 2007 with the ubiquitous classic, 'Five Years Time', it seemed Noah and the Whale might be doomed to be one hit wonders. But with a string of critically acclaimed tracks, and the release of their latest album, 'Last Night On Earth', they're proving the critics wrong and showing they're here to stay.

Bonecrusher Another year, another Bonecrusher. Would it live up to its name, or would it fall in an embarrassing heap on its metal arse? Kicking off the night were Angelus Apatrida an old school thrash band from the land of the current football World Cup champions. Thrash from Spain? Are you mad? Well, actually, no. Their efforts were diminished by one of the sludgiest, bass-heavy, sounds heard in a long time. Thrash relies on crispness and crunch, and so much that they could have wished to achieve was lost instantly. The relentless double bass drum onslaught boomed alarmingly and negated any bite that the guitars may have had. Don't get me wrong they were still entertaining, with all the prerequisite thrash components being firmly in place, but you couldn't help but wonder how murderous they could be with everything in their favour. Bearing in mind the early start, the pit erupted into life midway through their second track at about 6.25pm so clearly they were doing something right. One to keep an eye on for the next time they visit these shores...

AFI Bit of a contrast tonight at the Academy in Brum. In the main room, a mixture of punk, rock and hardcore, in the form of AFI, SOIA and The Dear and Departed, and in the Academy 3, Joshua Radin? I hope they have good soundproofing as I have a feeling Joshua won’t be loud enough to sing over tonight’s line up in the main room!

Frank Turner It’s been a couple of months now since I last spent an evening enjoying the company of Mr Frank Turner and it’s fair to say he’s obviously gone up in the world since his autumn 2009 tour. Back in 2009 I went to see him in Wolverhampton with a couple of songs in my head and a budding interest in the self proclaimed ‘Skinny, half-arsed English country singer’ and his unique brand of folk/punk. Since that show, I’ve become a bona-fide Frank Turner fan, and Sunday’s gig in the more prominent venue of Birmingham’s O2 Academy 1, was absolutely phenomenal!

Interview with Tim Nordwind from OK Go, Birmingham, UK - 12/01/2010 This is the interview that almost didn’t happen. GigJunkies photographer Wayne Fox was having car trouble and only at the death did the garage give it a clean bill of health. I happened to be battling my way through road closures, snow and typical winter traffic on my way down from York. Worst of all though Damian Kulash – Lead Singer and Lead Guitarist was pronounced unexplainably ill upon our fortunately early arrival. Nobody seemed to know quite what was wrong with him (there was even talk he may be pregnant) – Whether Damian would be fit enough to even do the show was uncertain. Fortunately, bands do interviews as a duo. Damian may have been too ill to talk but it didn’t stop Tim Nordwind taking to the stage and battling along solo.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs I really didn’t know what to expect from a Yeah Yeah Yeah gig... I have a couple of their albums but I’ve never seen them live before. Without wanting to enrage YYYs fans everywhere I had a preconceived idea that it might be a bit boring. Well happily I was wrong.
