The Tubes And so tonight to a packed Robin 2, us little Gig Junkies take a trip to Bilston, to the legendary Robin 2 to see a band who are legendary in their own right for lots of reasons. They have always been standout, different, notorious, way back in the day their '77 tour was banned in the UK due to British censorship. But now 40 years on - and still on form - The Tubes are here tonight - with their 'Mondo Pulp tour celebrating the pulp art era with all their classic hits.

Ray Quinn The last time I saw Ray Quinn (musically) was 9 years ago when he released his debut album 'Doing It My Way'. 2015 saw Ray head back into the studio to start work on a new commercial sound that would return him to his music, bringing us to the 2016 'No Man’s Land' Tour.

The Quireboys On arrival at Robin 2 in Bilston, I awaited the entrance of fascinating act, The Quireboys. Talented young artist Louis Coupe (lead singer of The Rooz) was on stage setting the scene and getting the audience ready for the rock styled acoustics of the main act. Firstly on the guitar then playing the piano this support was an entertaining artist warming up the audience nicely.

Steve Cropper Walking into Woody’s bar at The Robin 2, and seeing a genuine legend propping up the bar, chatting with the punters is one of the more surreal moments of my life*. But, as Steve Cropper (for it was he) was to say later “I’m just an old man, having some fun”.

Roger Chapman 'Back from Retirement' claimed the billing. Not normally a selling point for Rock'n'Roll, but when Roger Chapman's involved, it's worth taking a bit of notice.

New Model Army And so to the back-end of the Black Country. Hidden beyond the Black Country Route, in an inner-city town, lies the Robin 2. It is indeed in the back end of beyond, near the end of the world. But it has everything, really friendly welcome, great cozy venue, cheap refreshments and food and, tonight it has the powerful, raw and legendary New Model Army.

Van der Graaf Generator Van der Graaf Generator have been around since the late 1960s and are one of the few ‘prog rock’ bands to have unquestionably survived the punk era with their reputation fully intact. Even John Lydon seems to like them. So I’m really looking forward to seeing the band perform one of four UK gigs at the Robin2 tonight.

Lez Zeppelin I’m not usually a fan of tribute bands, but I’ll certainly make an exception for the excellent Lez Zeppelin, an all-girl band from New York, who play with absolute passion and great musicianship and add a gender-bending twist to the music of the great Led Zeppelin. They are more of a ‘she-incarnation’ of their heroes than a tribute band. They perform Zep’s music with superb accuracy and are a darned exciting live rock band.

Arthur Brown Arthur Brown and his band take the stage with masks and facepaint, as their organist plays a whimsical rendition of ‘Tea for Two’. This morphs into the more sinister ‘Nightmare’, a track from his famous psychedelic debut album ‘The Crazy World of Arthur Brown’. Like many of Brown’s tracks it has a heavy Hammond organ sound backing his wailing vocals from the fires of hell. Not surprisingly, Arthur’s set tonight features a number of songs from this album including, of course, ‘Fire’.

Wilko Johnson I was due to review Wilko Johnson at the Robin2 at the end of last year, but his tour was cancelled. Fans were stunned when it was then announced that the celebrated guitarist and songwriter had been diagnosed with terminal pancreatic cancer. That might have been the end of his musical story, except that Wilko has defiantly chosen to launch a farewell tour. Everyone in the audience at the Robin2 tonight knows that the gig is going to be a momentous event.

Strawbs Strawbs have been around in various guises since the late 1960’s. Among the large number of musicians passing through the ranks of the band have been celebrated chanteuse Sandy Denny and prog-rock keyboard wizard Rick Wakeman. Band leader Dave Cousins is the only original survivor, but the current line up includes key members from the 1970s, Dave Lambert (guitar) and Chas Cronk (bass). Versions of the band have been touring on and off for years, but what makes this tour particularly exciting is that it is the full-on electric band, rather than the more frequently seen stripped-down acoustic ensemble. Also, keeping it in the family, Rick Wakeman’s son, Adam, is playing keyboards.
