Postmodern Jukebox

It was late autumn in 2015 when I first came across Scott Bradlee and his fabulous Postmodern Jukebox. The song was ‘Creep’ and it was performed in what looked like just a room in someone’s house – but the arrangement and the performance was beyond anything I’d ever seen before. Modern music with a retro twist. It was love at first listen.

So when the ragtag band of exceptionally talented musicians took to the road, I couldn’t miss it!

Postmodern Jukebox

Postmodern Jukebox did not disappoint. Kicking off the show with a party atmosphere that didn’t quit, we were treated to a golden array of their favourites played (and sung) note-perfect with some comedy mixed in for good measure.

The instrumentals were all on point. Trombone, sax, clarinet, double bass, piano, tambourine, kazoo and even an air piano were used to create a golden sound of nostalgia that wrapped around the popular songs of today like a warm blanket. Guys and girls in the audience, some dressed to the nines in their favourite retro outfits and victory rolls, danced the night away to such hits as Stacey’s Mom (my personal favourite), Bye Bye Bye and Shake it Off.

Postmodern Jukebox

While the instruments were all fantastic, you can’t talk about Postmodern Jukebox without mentioning the jaw-dropping vocals. For their recordings, Postmodern Jukebox collaborate with all sorts of people, from X-factor to unknowns, but all selected for their talent. Truth be told, my husband was a little disappointed to read that one of his favourites wouldn’t be there on the night. But that disappointment soon disappeared as we were blown away by a vocal assault so powerful yet gentle that truly mirrored their recordings. Every single member of the ensemble kept the energy right up and going from the first to the last.

Lastly, but certainly not least, the ensemble was brought together with some truly fabulous tap dancing, providing percussion and movement in one spectacular package. If you’ve never seen their Star Wars suite, I suggest you go and look it up on YouTube now – but it was even better live!

We were even treated to an appearance by the infamous ‘Tambourine Guy’ who found a fellow Tambourine Guy and Gal who were invited up to the stage in the final throws of the show.

Postmodern Jukebox

So all in all, it was a corking show. They Rounded off the evening with an encore featuring renditions of some truly golden age songs. As Time Goes By turned the O2 Academy into a dance hall of the past with everyone slow dancing with their partners.

So if you haven’t heard of them yet – look them up. If you have, and they’re coming to a location near you, get on board!
