New Found Glory

On a cold, damp Saturday afternoon as I approach Birmingham’s Institute the building is lined with fans queuing around the block to see New Found Glory. As I get closer to box office somebody behind me just couldn’t contain their excitement and decided to urinate in their trousers, whilst announcing to everyone around that they had just done this. Bless! It seemed like it was going to be one of those nights.

Only Rivals

Only Rivals

First band to the stage were Dublin rockers Only Rivals. As most people were still making their way into the building there was only a handful of people on the balcony area and it was sparsely populated on the floor. Subsequently the crowd were pretty non responsive to the boys efforts and only got the occasional round of applause from the crowd. Shame.

Only Rivals

As the boys were coming to the end of there set a member of the crowd shouted “Take your top off” which prompted a quick response from Stephen the vocalist “only if you show me your dick” before going into their final song. Blimey!!

Candy Hearts

Candy Hearts

Up next were Candy Hearts, a band from New Jersey, whom Chad Gilbert of New Found Glory fame had recently helped produce their latest record.

It took them a while to set up, and they didn’t get off to a great start as Mariel (Vocals/Guitar) stated that her ”equipment kept breaking and the volume in the front speakers needed to be turned up, as she couldn’t hear anything”.

Candy Hearts

Once the band got going there was a feel good vibe and the crowd looked to be enjoying the performance. Mariel tried to get the room involved in singing the line “You’re a bad idea and you know it” but the crowd responded with minimal effort. Poor effort Brummies #musttryharder

Candy Hearts

From the mumbles around the room people were complaining that you couldn’t hear the backing vocals and Muriel was very Hayley-Esk (Hayley Williams of Paramore fame), but putting technical difficulties aside the band had a good set and personally I enjoyed them.

State Champs

State Champs

Now it was time to get the pop punk party started as State Champs took to the stage, with crowd members flying forward and making the security work extra hard during the first three songs.

State Champs

Their entire set was very active which was in turn reciprocated by the crowd with plenty of head bopping and fist pumping. Unfortunately their set was cut short because of how many bands were on the bill. A shame as they really got the place bouncing.

The Story So Far

The Story So Far

Last of the support acts were The Story So Far, They burst out on to stage with a high level of energy which was kept constant throughout and was only matched by the enthusiasm of the crowd.

The Story So Far

It was a security’s nightmare with a constant flow of crowd surfers! There was no let up and not surprisingly they were responsible for the biggest mosh pit of the night (so far). It was a high-energy performance from start to finish and they defiantly raised the bar ready for New Found Glory to take to the stage next. Perfect.

NFG – 8:30 – 9:50

New Found Glory

The proverbial clock struck 8.30 and it was time for the Pop Punk legends New Found Glory to take to the stage. The lights went down and an old piece of video footage was projected onto the backdrop before a translucent skull and crown. One by one the band came out and exploded into a high energy set with fans going absolutely wild with the obligatory plastic cups being thrown back and forth.

New Found Glory

Chad Gilbert asked the lighting technician to “turn down the hot dog lights” as he couldn’t see everyone’s beautiful faces before speaking with the fans. Ian was full of energy and was awesome to photograph with a multitude of wonderful facial expressions. Splendid.

Once again Chad spoke to the fans asking if anyone had seen their Ready And Willing video on YouTube, He said ”if you haven’t seen it that’s cool but go on YouTube and just read the comments”, explaining that on Youtube people comment how cool and young the band are but when they check their “Wiki” page out they complain they are a bunch of old dudes.

New Found Glory

The Boys played a varied set with old classics, fan favorites and their most recent tracks, like “don’t let her pull you down”, “Kiss Me”, “Dress to Kill”, “Stubborn” and “Hit Or Miss”.

While the guys took a breather Chad spoke with the crowd again and professed his appreciation for the amount of support they have received over the past 17 years stating “Do what you want to in life and don’t worry about being a failure”. He then showed his jokey side changing the subject over to Ian Grushka’s weight loss over the past month and a half. The room started to chant “ Ian, Ian, Ian” Chad smiles and look over to Ian and asks, “Would you ever want a six pack?” Ian replied with a straight “No” as he sucked in his stomach comically.

New Found Glory

Things got a little more surreal as Jordan asked if anyone was going bowling tonight “because he wants to hang out” for Chad to promptly claim that Jordan was a Wizard who could cast a spell which would make everyone in the room move. “You can try to resist but you wont be able to keep still” claimed the singer. With that, Jordan waved his hands kicked off “My Friends Over You” and true to their words, the room was rocking! Is Jordan really a Wizard?

New Found Glory

The night was coming to a close and Chad beckoned the revellers upstairs to stand up (he should have used another spell!). Regardless, everyone was up on their feet moving, pumping fists and there were crowd surferers a plenty as they played their final song “All Down Hill From Here”. A great night had by all, full of energy and non-stop movement from all the bands.
