Gig Review and Photography by Jason Broadhurst

Manchester is the second night of the tour for Of Mice and Men and there is a great turn out not only for the headliners but also for the support acts as the Apollo is already starting to fill up at the early time of 7.30pm.

That is with good reason as Hands Like Houses kick off the proceedings like a house on fire. A total unknown to myself before the gig but certainly one I will be keeping a closer eye on going forward.

Much like the openers, Crown The Empire are fully embraced by the crowd too. Tracks ‘The Fallout’ and ‘Weight Of The World’, prove to be popular amongst the waiting fans.

Finally the main event. The lights dim, the backdrop is lowered and the band appear from behind the curtain. Orange County metallers Of Mice & Men hit the stage to great applause. Within seconds the gut wrenching riff off ‘Pain’ is sounding from the speakers and when Carlile joins them he bursts into the opening lyrics sending the crowd into overdrive. From then onwards they work their way through popular tracks such as ‘The Lie’, ‘Feels Like Forever’ and the fan favourite ‘Would You Still Be There’.

Despite performing in what is an already saturated music scene it is clear to see why they are in high regard and have a loyal fanbase. The band have some serious energy and charisma on stage which is backed up with great harmonies  from both the vocals and guitar riffs. Moving back to what is happening on the stage the band show no signs of letting up showcasing new tracks from their most recent album ‘Cold World’ as well as the ever popular ‘Restoring Force’.

The band return to the stage to a rousing reception for an encore of ‘You’re Not Alone’ and ‘Second & Sebring’ to see the night off in fitting style. Definitely one gig that will live long in the memory.
