The always hard-working Neil Young is back on the road with another tour, performing a small number of UK gigs. This time it’s not with his long-serving band Crazy Horse, but with a new group of young bucks called Promise of the Real, a band that includes two of Willie Nelson’s sons, Lukas and Micah.

While a review ticket was not available, Gig Junkies was lucky enough to get a photo pass to bring you pictures of the opening solo acoustic part of the set at Leeds. Supporting Neil Young was the acclaimed singer-songwriter Laura Marling and her band.

Young’s set began solo with some of his best-loved songs, including ‘After the Goldrush’ and ‘Heart of Gold’. These were performed on piano, acoustic guitar and pump organ, with Young peering-out menacingly from under the wide-brimmed hat, which seems to have become his adopted headgear in recent years.

After the solo set he was joined on stage by Promise of the Real for the electric part of the set, which included many old favourites like ‘Winterlong’, ‘Down By the River’ and ‘Powderfinger’. As is often the case with Young’s gigs, there were some welcome inclusions of less-played songs, tonight including ‘If I Could Have Her Tonight’ from his first solo album from back in 1969.

Unfortunately I wasn’t able to stay for the electric set after taking the photos, but, yes, it looks like this whole tour has been an absolute cracker from what I’ve seen on You Tube. The band works really well and has enabled Neil to dust off a lot of songs from the back catalogue. Some great versions of songs, like ‘Winterlong’ and ‘Words’, for example. Lets hope a live album is released of the tour.
