Lianne La Havas

Every now and again, you go to a gig and although the act has played well and ticked all the boxes, the night lacked that certain pazzazz.

Sometimes however, something special, nay magical happens. A night to savour. Some might call it a ‘wow night’. Monday at The Glee Club in Birmingham was one such evening.

Marques Toliver

The omens were good from the start when the main act, Miss Lianne La Havas pottered past and said hello to me. Glorious!

Marques Toliver

Support came from the uber talented Marques Toliver who offered an act seldom seen, belting out glorious vocal on top of looped violin, whilst playing lead violin over the top. Ingenious. In a time when people are trying find a unique twist this was certainly one.

Marques Toliver

An act perfectly suited for Jools Holland, the instantly likeable Toliver, displayed his vocal and musical prowess with ‘I’m on a Journey’ in what I have to say was an amazing introduction for a support act.

Marques was very comedic and very relaxed from the off. You could tell he was having a blast! “I’m really relaxed you guys, normally I’m really jittery” he claimed as he sipped from what looked like a Cuppa Soup – spoon and all.

Having delighted the crowd with his skills on the violin, he moved over to that more traditional of gig instruments… The Xylophone! Together with audience participation clicking the raindrops he created a thoroughly magical sound. For his final track, Toliver made his way to the middle of the crowd to sing – something I’ve never seen at a gig before. Really great and definitely an act to look out for in the future.

Lianne La Havas

Up step the gorgeous Lianne La Havas and her silky smooth vocal. As per her support act, she started off on her own, this time the guitar her instrument of choice. Instantly the audience were mesmerised. A cross between Sade and India Irie with her hauntingly beautiful vocal, she glided through ‘No Room For Doubt’. As her band joined her on stage, Lianne announced it was her first time playing her own music in Birmingham and paid homage to Mr Marques Toliver and how amazing he was. There was no arguement from the sold out audience.

With her big infectious smile  beaming ear to ear, she launched into ‘Forget’ a little ditty about her ex boyfriend – the staple subject of all budding songstresses, or so it seems.

Back to her lonesome with a enticingly entitled ‘Tease me’, her voice as one reveller commented was phenominal  – “like butter melting on your brain”. I had to agree.

As she went on to cover Jill Scott’s ‘He Loves Me’ (I’m guessing one of her idols), she proved that not only did she have a Goddess like voice, but was also a really fine guitarist.

The last time I was this blown away at The Glee club was when I saw a little known singer-songwriter called Adele many moons ago. The impact this young lady had was comparable. Greatness is destined!

Having been joined on stage by her support act on backing vocals, the lovely Lianne even had time for a rendition of happy birthday for one reveller, Danielle, whos boyfriend had got in touch on Facebook and dedicated her next song ‘Lost and Found’ to the birthday girl, as her guitarist moved on to the double bass. She seemed genuinely overwhelmed by the support from the partizan crowd and as she concluded the title track of her forthcoming album ‘Is your Love Big Enough’ she left  the stage, obviously elated blowing kisses and waving goodbye to everyone. On what was a very special night indeed it was evident to all that this young lady is destined for much much bigger things.
