We are at that time where we are all being encouraged to tick one box or another. Where even if you do you may not get the result you hoped for… some things are not as advertised. Disappointment often follows. For a genuinely good evening out go and see Katherine Priddy play and if it happens to be a lovely intimate, warm, friendly venue like Kitchen Garden in King’s Heath Birmingham then lucky you.

George Boomsma opened the evening for Katherine Priddy and did a great job of getting the gig off to a good start. A very accomplished folk singer in his own right with a couple of well received albums under his belt already. George has supported bands such as Skinny Lister, been played on BBC Radio 1 and BBC 6 music. Once Georges set was over he stayed and played guitar and sang with Katherine for several numbers that went down very well.

Katherine is a singer with a fabulous voice, from fragile to strong her voice does all it can to bring you her stories in songs in a way that will have you holding your breath in wonder. An engaging warm, funny personality all added to her musicianship leave you in no doubt you are in the company of someone destined for the top.

Talent this good should be enjoyed by as many people as possible. Tonight at Kitchen Garden around 80 of us have that pleasure. No chat from the audience while Katherine sings… no messing with mobile phones, Just a captivated room. Perfect.

Along with songs from her last EP Wolf and a funny bawdy ballad or two, we are treated to her latest single Letters From A Travelling Man. Katherine’s set is full of wonderful guitar playing and well-structured songs that mean something. For her encore Katherine sang a Richard Thompson favourite… Beeswing. A lovely way to end such a good night.

This was a gig that ticked all the important boxes for me. A performer at the top of her game… tick. Good supporting artist… tick. Good venue… tick. Support local music it is good for you.
