I rock up to The Symphony Hall looking forward to seeing Susanne Sundfoer support the every charming John Grant. Unfortunately she has taken the night off to rest her voice and instead we are treated to Cate Le Bon. This welsh singer songwriter has an incredible band behind her, constantly changing instruments and creating an incredible sound. She has a beautiful and haunting voice that seems to capture those of us in the crowd who arrived early.

There’s a brief set change over before the endearing John Grant takes to the stage. Before he starts, he tells us tales of his 50th birthday adventure to ride rollercoasters and name checks a few fans who either chose one of this songs as their first dance or for one lucky girl, her first gig!

He opens with ‘You Don’t Have To’ a simple song that builds and builds and with his stage set up, it’s feels like I’m listening to the soundtrack of a movie.

In amongst the crowd favourites, like ‘GMF’ we are treated to some songs, ‘It’s Easier’ and  ‘Outer Space’ that don’t often get an outing.

A strobe filled Sympony Hall accompanies ‘Pale Green Ghosts’ and in that moment I fall in love with John Grant all over again. It’s incredible to see the Symphony Hall in such glory, with it being the first standing show at the venue. Any band that plays in the future has a lot to live up to.

Throughout the whole show there are numerous moments where the hairs on the back of my neck stand up and I feel a rush of emotion and none more so than when he starts to play ‘Glacier’.

I do not understand how anyone can not fall for John Grant. From his incredible voice to his charming tales and his wonderful lyrics this is a man whose words and songs have soundtracked so many moments. He captivates his audience and at points the anticipation is palpable.

He was the perfect choice to showcase the beautiful Symphony Hall to a new era of music and fans. The sound is incredible in there and John’s vocals were crisp and clear.

Hopefully with the huge success of John Grant the Symphony Hall can expand its roster of acts so more people can enjoy it. John mentioned he would touring again towards the end of the the year catch him if you can.
