Gig Junkies’ Sophie Jones sat down to chat with Josh Farro aka FARRO the former lead guitarist and backing singer of Paramore and about life as a solo artist, his new album ‘Walkways’ and how his first solo tour was going…

SO YOU’RE SEVEN DAYS INTO YOUR UK TOUR, HOW’S IT BEEN GOING?

JOSH: Awh man, it’s been awesome we’ve had great turnouts to the shows and everyone seems to be loving it.

HOW HAVE THE FANS REACTED TO YOUR NEW MUSIC?

JOSH: We’ve had people singing along and dancing so its been going very good.

‘WALKWAYS’ IS YOUR FIRST SOLO ALBUM; HOW DID YOU FIND WORKING ON YOUR OWN COMPARED TO A BAND ENVIRONMENT?

JOSH: It was a little lonely at times but I felt there was a lot of freedom in the decision making process and I enjoy that bit; as sometimes I can be a little bit of a control freak I guess (laughs), So it was cool that I got to be hands on with every detail of the song(s) and if I didn’t like something a certain way I could always change it.

At the same time I did miss having that band interaction to bounce ideas off one another but having the producer Jacquire King was like having another band member, it was similar interaction. I don’t prefer one over the other its just different.

SO THAT BEING SAID WHOM WOULD YOU GO TO BOUNCE IDEAS OFF IF YOU WASN’T SURE ABOUT SOMETHING?

JOSH: I would just ask the producer or sometimes; the engineers as they were friends of mine, also the players that came in like Zac (Farro) came in to play drums on the record and I would ask him what do you think? as I’m all about everyone expressing their opinion, as two heads are better then one.

ALSO FOR THE TRACK WALKWAYS YOU SHOT ALL THE FOOTAGE ON GO PRO’S, HOW DID THE IDEA FOR THAT COME ABOUT?

JOSH: This guy right here (gestures towards his manger). We were just brainstorming on music video ideas and he just put it out there “what if we sent cameras, GoPros to fans all over the world”; which I thought would be a great idea. So we reached out to GoPro and they sent out the Hero4’s and we had quite a task, we had to package each one and send them out to Brazil, Spain, New Zealand but the outcome is awesome and it was worth the time, its good to think out the box a little.

WHAT’S YOUR FAVOURITE TRACK OFF THE ALBUM AND WHY?

JOSH: I really love ‘Walkways’  because I feel like it’s a unique song. There’s a lot of energy, its uplifting and I feel really happy and positive when I play it or listen to it; but I also love ‘Islands’ as I love sad, slower really melodic ambience sounding songs so those two are neck and neck.

NOW IT’S THANKSGIVING DAY IN AMERICA TODAY SO WHAT WOULD YOU USUALLY BE DOING IF YOU WERE AT HOME?

JOSH:  That’s a good question! I’d be with my wife Jenna right now at her Parents house they live out in the countryside in Nashville; they have about 40 arches of land so its really secluded forest and all her family comes out and we’d usually have a fire going, tons of food its just like real country.

So we’d be eating way too much food; Turkey, Mash potatoes, Mac N Cheese, all kinds of stuff and Gravy. There would be a whole desert table. Actually (Checks phone for time) its about noon in America right now; so we’d probably eat around 1 o’clock and then eat again around 7 or 8 as you kind of get hungry again but your not really; its like I guess I should just eat some more and then feel gross all over again (laughs)

Usually my Dad or my Mom will have Thanksgiving dinner so its kind of split; so its just a lot of family and friends all day.

AND AS IT’S THANKSGIVING WHAT WOULD YOU BE THANKFUL FOR TODAY?

JOSH:  I’m Thankful for so many things; I’m thankful for, first and foremost my wife, I love her with all my heart not to get too cheesy she’s the greatest gift I’ve ever been given and I love my animals my two cats and my dog I’m very thankful for that.

Also I’m just thankful for my fans, to be able to play, write music and do that for a living because most people don’t get to do what they love so I’m extremely thankful for that.

WHAT WOULD YOU LIKE TO ACHIEVE WITH YOUR SOLO PROJECT, WHERE DO YOU WANT TO SEE IT GO, IS THERE A GOAL?

JOSH:  That’s a good questions as well! Erm…..I don’t want to put any limitations on the music and I don’t want to say I don’t want to get “big”.

I’d love to sell out areas or stadiums but who wouldn’t; but a goal for me is just as long as I can afford to continue to put out music and write, record and tour then to me that’s success and id love to continue to do that for as long as I can; so that’s the goal everything else from there would be a bonus and I know with hard work it can be successful.

FINALLY WHAT ARE YOU PLANS FOR THE REST OF THE YEAR AND GOING INTO 2017?

JOSH:  Rest of the year we have a lot of work were doing on the business side of “Farro” as were just starting off, were booking more tours and trying to get over here for festival season but we defiantly want to get back here as soon as possible and then I’ve got  a lot of new songs I want to record and release so that’s top priority.
