Gig Review by Michelle Griffin with Photography by Ian Dunn

Following the release of the album Splinter (Songs from a Broken Mind) late last year and the subsequent UK, European and US tours, in little over six months Gary Numan has returned to the UK from his US base playing 9 dates (plus Sonisphere). The Leamington Spa gig was the penultimate of the tour.

Tonight’s support is Roman Remains. This three-piece UK band have accompanied Gary throughout the US leg of the Splinter tour and now join him in the UK. Playing a mix of Electronic/Industrial. Vocalist Leila Moss’s (formerly Duke Spirit) assured performance was well received by the Numan fans. ‘This Stone Is Starting To Bleed’ and ‘Gazebo’ standing out in particular.

Just gone 9pm. Gary Numan enters the stage shrouded in dry ice to the pounding, industrial sound of heavy guitars and bass intro that is Resurrection. For this tour the band are: Steve Harris (guitar), Tim Muddiman (bass), Richard Beasley (drums) and new keyboardist Josh Giroux. Moving straight into I Am Dust (from Splinter) with its grinding intro gets the fans in the mood.

This is followed by Metal from Gary’s 1979 album The Pleasure Principle – another fan favourite. Gary then followed this with more powerful tracks from Splinter whilst intermixing with some oldies such as Films, Down In the Park, Films and Pure. (Yes, Pure is by now an oldie.) My favourite from the new being the dark, uncompromising Here in the Black and The Calling. The pace slows for the very open-hearted Lost. The set continues with We’re the Unforgiven, Love Hurt Bleed – the first single from Splinter – and finally Prayer for the Unborn.

After the customary Numan chants from the packed house, Gary returns for the encore to get the crowd pumping with I Die You Die followed by the ritual that is Are Friends Electric. Gary finishes with Splinter’s final track – the emotional, beautifully-crafted My Last Day. A perfect ending to a perfect gig.

Gary appears in August at Altfest, and then his homecoming gig in Hammersmith in November.
