Gig Review by Emma Louise Walker with Photography by John Mason

A Halcyon, for those that are unaware, is a kingfisher which is said to be a peaceful and happy creature. However, Ellie Goulding’s Halcyon tour was anything but peaceful. Her fusion of electro-pop had the sold out gig bouncing off the walls and even Ellie herself brought her cheesy dance moves to the party.

After her recent chart success, with single ‘Burn’, the British pop star visited the Wolverhampton Civic Hall on her UK stretch of her tour. In late 2012 she released her second studio Album ‘Halcyon’ and revealed a new style to her music which makes it hard to put a finger on her genre. Supporting her on the night were southern songwriting-duo Chasing Grace. The pair treated crowds to a 6 song set that included a cover of dance sensation Disclosure’s, ‘White Noise’.

Following their impressive set was the eccentric soul singer LuLu James. Entering the stage in a hooded cape, which she later threw on the floor, the singer couldn’t quite follow the excitement that Chasing Grace had left within the crowd. Many faces looked puzzled as they watched her strut around the stage in shoes with no heels. After making an attempt to chat about football the only crowd interaction seemed to be when the set-list got stuck to chewing gum on her shoes. There is no denying she is a talented star in the making but unfortunately she was met with the wrong crowd on this occasion.

Ellie Goulding bounded on to the stage opening with second single from the new Album, ‘Figure 8’. The stage design seemed simple with glittered sheets covering stage blocks that matched with her own sparkling attire. Attention was drawn the screens behind her which were filled with animations throughout her hour and a half set. At one point an animation of flying kingfishers graced the screen whilst Ellie energetically danced around the stage.

The raw talent that Ellie Goulding has makes it hard to compare her live performance to anyone else but her vocals were often lost within some of her upbeat tracks such as ‘Starry Eyed’. However half way through her set, Ellie came back on to the stage with just an acoustic guitar to wow the crowd with tracks ‘Guns and Horses’, ‘I know you Care’ and finally the Elton John cover, ‘Your Song’. She assured everybody that the man himself likes her cover before the sold out venue sang it back to her.

After her acoustic break, she promised to bring it to the stage with an energetic performance of her well known track with Calvin Harris ‘ I need your love’. It is impressive that her talent can draw in such a diverse crowd of people and most, equally as energetic as her. The heat in the venue got the better of Ellie, who took her sparkling top off to reveal a cropped sports top with the word ‘BabyGirl’ on . She got the crowd up on their feet for her last few songs and even left her recent chart single ‘Burn’ until the Encore.

A great night of music and dancing was had by all of the audience and I’m sure the women in the crowd left with the hope that they could be as energetic and talented as this 25 year old. However, if they were like myself they were probably leaving with figure envy and wondering whether to go for a run or to tuck in to some ice cream afterwards.
