Flying Ferraris, phenomenal pyrotechnics and a half time show that saw an audience member attempt to win £20,000. This could only mean one thing as music royalty Drake tore down Birmingham for the opening night of three dates in the city for the ‘Assassination Vacation’ tour.

The youthful audience were treated to fellow Canadian Tory Lanez opening for the dynamic star, the energy filled the Resorts World Arena immediately. Chanting along to ‘Diego’ his energetic set captivated the crowd as he bounced around the open stage in the middle of the arena floor. With teenage girls screaming and lads skanking the 26 year old rapper sent them into a frenzy crowd surfing whilst treating them to favourites like ‘LUV’. Declaring he was drunk and removing his trademark chains so the audience could feel the music he ended the awesome set with new track ‘Freaky’.

With the energy at fever pitch the audience were kept on their toes by Radio 1Xtra’s Tiffany Calver as they waited for their hero to adorn the stage.

As the lights dropped so did a giant curtain encasing the superstar in a mesh box on the stage, with projections of high definition scorpions climbing all around the outside the crowd went wild as Drizzy spat out ‘8 Out Of 10’ and ‘Mob Ties’. With the adoring audience jumping up and down, the curtain was released to screams and cheers as they got a better glimpse of their idol as he bounced around the stage keeping the party going with ‘Started From The Bottom’.

“This right now is what I live for these nights.” He told his fans as he energetically bounced from one side of the stage to the others, making sure he gave them their money’s worth, bursting into a mega mix of tracks to keep them on their toes whilst thanking them for the last ten years. The likes of ‘Crew Love’, ‘HYFR’ and ‘The Motto’ sent the arena into a fever pitch as bright visual graphics lit up the LED stage from water to a scrolling cellphone nothing was stopping the incredible showman as he wowed Birmingham.

With a basket ball court projected onto the stage, ever the philanthropist Drake brought a fan on stage in an attempt to win just over £20,000 with a three hoop challenge. Taking away the third prize of £250, Drake threw in a jersey from his OVO range.

With pyrotechnic flames and bright bangs the creative genius left the audience a gasp as he threw in the hits for good measure. Reflecting the crowd, Drake beamed, looking as though he was enjoying the show as much as them, he plowed through the likes of ‘Hotline Bling’, ‘Work’ and ‘Nice For What’ accompanied by his energetic group of female dancers.

With its catchy verse ‘In My Feelings’ raised the roof of the arena with an impromptu sing along before grime starlet Giggs appeared for ‘KMT’ just when you thought the bar couldn’t be raised anymore.

With the emotional encore going back to 2008, videos adorning the screen of the then younger looking superstar and his family with the beginning of his fame, the crowd went wild as ‘God’s Plan’ filled the sound system.

“I love coming here so much, I’m gonna write new material and I promise to come back here next year if you will have me.” These were Drake’s parting words as the phenomenal show drew to close and Toronto’s finest left the building to cheers and ear defining screams. I don’t know about the other 16,000 in the sold out venue but after a show like that, I don’t think I can wait till next year as Drake takes the tour across Europe.
