Crisis Presents, Featuring Paul Weller, Emeli Sande + Miles Kane

With Christmas approaching, it is inevitable that we consider those less fortunate; the people who battle nights on the street, attempting to get back on their feet. Crisis address this through music, hosting this night with a top line-up, all of whom have given their time, without payment, to raise money for those who need it. And with a line-up consisting of Miles Kane, Emeli Sandé and Paul Weller, it’s certainly worth donating for.

Kane’s opening set alluded to the headliner, with tracks such as ‘Rearrange’ capturing the 60s essence which Weller did successfully many years ago. The Modfather joined him onstage for a new track titled ‘You’re Gonna Get It’ which he wrote with Kane, much in the same vein as the rest of his work but with a beat even more danceable than his singles which closed the set, ‘Inhaler’ and ‘Come Closer’. Perhaps this will be his chance to break through into a more mainstream audience.

Emeli Sandé is brought onstage by host Ben Elton, the night’s special guest- and she was, indeed, a spectacle. A voice both inimitable and unbeatable, she deserves the many accolades she has received as this year’s breakthrough artists. From the 90s r’n’b live-beat of ‘Heaven’ to the gospel intricacies within ‘Next To Me’, there are no other options but to be in awe of such an incredible voice, a rare gem in the current pop music.

Sadly, Sandé set the bar high for Weller, and only at certain points did he surpass the audience’s expectations. With an extensive discography which proves him to have been continuously hard working throughout his career, it is a shame that his understanding of his skill does not come across in the choice of setlist, which features a couple too many songs from this year’s full-length ‘Sonik Kicks’. Despite this, and the fact that his voice has lost its punch and power over the years, his ability to craft a great song is very clear throughout the set.

It’s when he finally plays tracks from his Jam and Style Council days that he receives applause- ‘Start!’ is rapturous, the chants united in the deep, middle-aged tone of men who remember the song from their younger days, while ‘Carnation’ served as a treat for the bigger fans scattered amongst the audience.

One highlight from his more recent work was ‘The Dangerous Age’, which brought a new twist onto Weller’s signature sound, something which was also heard on 1995’s ‘Stanley Road’, the Northern Soul piano chords smooth and suave within the Apollo.

However what truly makes this set special is the collaborations which Weller does with the generation of artists he has inspired; Kane and Sandé each make an appearance on ‘Echoes Round The Sun’ and ‘People Get Ready’ respectively, but the focal point of the show came with the anticipated ‘That’s Entertainment’ featuring none other than Bradley Wiggins on guitar, fresh from his Sports Personality Of The Year crowning. The excitement is dampened by an abrupt end to the show due to curfews, but, the general consensus from punters was that seeing Wiggo onstage with his hero had been worth the ticket price.

A great lineup for an incredible cause, awareness and money was raised at a crucial time for the hard-working charity, which really does make an impact on the countries homeless.
