Clean Bandit have enjoyed quite a run recently; I’d say winning the Grammy Award this year for Best Dance Recording has only brightened the spotlight already shining on them as a result of storming the pop charts. At Gig Junkies, we couldn’t resist the opportunity to see how they group would translating such success into a tour.

Manchester’s Apollo is packed out, proving the power and influence that one or two truly great commercial hits can bring. The crowd is a varied one, again showing the reach the group has managed to attain in a relatively short period of time. After supporting sets from Jess Glynne and Whilk & Misky, Clean Bandit take to the stage with expectation in the room at a definite high.

The combination of dance, electro and classical music isn’t new but it remains intriguing, engaging and mostly, when done right, catchy. The presence of a string quartet helps bring songs from the band’s album ‘New Eyes’ to life, giving them another dimension in a live capacity. That combined with the relatively simple stage set up and lighting makes for a great and atmosphere.

It would be fair to say that the best received tracks are the hits. The atmosphere in the room hikes another level when they are played and Jess Glynne’s performance on ‘Real Love’ is a real highlight. Her voice is sharp and incredibly powerful. She is reminiscent of the 90s divas who would help dance tracks to soar up the charts during the decade. ‘Rather Be’ is also another memorable moment, and the crowd reaction to it in a live capacity simply shows how big a track it has become. It has such a groove that the audience cannot resist dancing along. Bringing to the evening with a cover of ‘Show Me Love’ is a stroke of genius as it has the venue on their feet with hands in the air. It’s an absolute classic and it’s performed brilliantly.

Clean Bandit need a few more big hits up their sleeves to really pull off a ‘must-see’ set and to really bring to life a venue the size of the Apollo, but gaging the reception they received in Manchester, they definitely have the fan base ready and waiting for it.
