Slayer Tonight’s Slayer show at Manchester Arena was momentous in more ways than one. They brought all the fire with them (and we mean ALL the fire), they brought not one, not two but three incredible bands along for the ride - and most of all - it will be the last time we get to experience Slayer on a world tour - Hell's house band are retiring.

Trivium If you had survived the Valentine’s Day Anthrax gig there is every chance you would have been returning to see Trivium tonight. One thing that Trivium are known for is being able to bring one hell of a support. In the past their tours have seen the likes of Children Of Bodom, In Flames and As I Lay Dying grace line ups. With that in mind fans are queuing up in their numbers even well before the 7pm doors to cast their eyes and ears over tonight's too.

Anthrax 30 years after the release of the seminal album ‘Among the Living’, the thrash metal pioneers from the Big Apple were back on tour and ready to induce days of post-concert neck-aches. Bullet For My Valentine 10 years has passed since Bullet For My Valentine hit the scene, headlining the Kerrang! Tour and it just so happened they are playing the very same venue again tonight. Alongside that they released their first full release 'The Poison', although tonight's show isn't about that there is definitely a sense of nostalgia with fans new and old in attendance.

Untitled Music Project It’s been quite a week for noisy cult Birmingham based bands to reform for a ‘one off’ gig. Last Saturday witnessed the second coming of Distophia during the rather excellent All Years Leaving festival and tonight was the turn of much loved shouty, screamy, punky trio Untitled Musical Project to deafen the nation’s young...and not so young... once more.

Castrovalva Ho ho ho. Whilst Christmas may mean carols, hymns, X Factor nonsense and Cliff singing about ickle baby Jesus to most of the population happily some people are still fighting the good fight, musically speaking at least. So a Santa’s sack full of respect to Distorted Tapes / Rhi Lee for putting together four bands that well and truly stuff most of the musical turkeys around at this time of year. Not Cliff obviously. Cliff is God. No... really... he actually is... a tramp outside Wetherspoons told me.

The Catharsis It’s been a few months since I attended a sweaty pub gig and by Satan’s horns I’ve missed ‘em. Especially when they’re as ear shreddingly, bone crushingly, eye ball gougingly good as this one, set in the delightfully shabby chic...well, shabby anyway... room above the Actress & Bishop.

Romans 31 artists, 7 venues, one aim... to raise loadsa cash, dosh, wonga... call it what you will... for (cue 70’s DJ voice) charidee. Yep, some of Birmingham’s finest gave up their Saturday to physically and metaphorically rattle the ol’ tin, giving warm hearted punters the chance to catch up with a pretty dazzling range of genres... everything from the gentle and acoustic to the LOUD AND THRASHY.

Hammerfest III Anticipation doesn't even come close as the journey unfolded towards the first festival of the year. It may not have been under canvas, but yours truly and uber-tog Gobi were like school kids at the prospect of what was to come. Alcoholic oblivion? Rhetorical question. The finest that metal had to offer? Oh yes, and then some... uncharacteristically blue skies were overhead as we arrived. Check in was swift and cheery, and Roman soldiers and ladies in togas had got to be a result. Enough said – add whatever witticism you feel appropriate... Enough of the pre-amble, to the bands...
